Pubology - Ann Arbor

Pubology - Ann Arbor Often, our best conversations are held over a pint with friends. Thus, Pubology was born. Pubology is all about public conversations on deep stuff.

A couple of times a semester, we reserve a room at “The Original Cottage Inn,” grab a beer, a slice of pizza and listen to an expert present on an important cultural question. Following the presentation there’s a Q and A with the presenter and discussions at our table. If you want a safe and thoughtful way to engage the public conversations of our day join us for Pubology!

Get excited for the last Pubology of the academic year on TUESDAY, MARCH 19!🍺 Word on the street is Dr. Joseph M. Dunne from Concordia University Ann Arbor is very excited!

For years now, scientific discoveries and new technologies have made it possible for human beings to alter the genetic makeup of organic life of all kinds. These changes may seem benign when it comes to making pesticide resistant crops or larger tomatoes, but how should we think about such technologies when applied to human beings? Is such engineering ethical, and does altering human DNA carry with it potential risks or unforeseen problems? How does the ability to manipulate a person’s genetic make up square with our understanding of what it means to be human? Join us Tuesday, March 19 for our next Pubology with Dr. Jospeh M. Dunne as we tackle the question, “Can genetic engineering make us more than human?"

ONE WEEK until our next Pubology—"Is there extraterrestrial life?" 🛸

Let's get to know our speaker, Patrick McNally! ⤵️

Patrick McNally has worked in the aerospace industry developing spacecraft, rovers, and instruments for over 45 years. With degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan, Patrick is a “rocket scientist.” His own curiosity and perseverance has taken him inside the space shuttle, next to the Galileo Spacecraft and Probe, and on the Dream Chaser crew vehicle. Instruments and tools developed by Patrick and teams he has led have made possible a variety of space missions as small as cubesats and the Mars Pathfinder Rover and as large as the International Space Station and the James Webb Space Telescope.

Catch Patrick at Pubology next week! Details below:

Are we alone in the universe? What are scientists aiming to detect when looking for life outside of planet Earth? Where in the Solar System have they actually looked, and where are they planning to look next? Patrick McNally, a rocket scientist, will help us answer these questions. As Managing Director of the Space Physics Research Lab at University of Michigan (University of Michigan - Climate & Space), McNally leads a team of engineers, managers, and technicians that develop the electronics for the extraterrestrial biological laboratories doing this research. You will leave this Pubology with more curiosity about the Solar System’s amazing area of discovery and be better able to discern what you read and hear as fact or hype.
