A horse walks into a bar on Route 66. No, seriously.

The Broken Spoke Lounge has been holding it down at 3101 SW 6th Avenue in Amarillo since 1991 — when Grady Mitchell took a fading storefront on a forgotten highway and turned it into the most authentic dive bar on the Mother Road.

Grady built it. Ran it for twenty years. When he passed in 2012, his son Keith picked up right where his dad left off. Same bar. Same family. Open 365 days a year. Free turkey on Thanksgiving. Strangers walk in, friends walk out. And yeah… sometimes a horse walks in too.

Most legendary Route 66 bars trace their roots to the 1930s and ‘40s. The Broken Spoke was born in the revival — part of the wave that brought Amarillo’s 6th Street Historic District back to life. The Mitchells didn’t inherit the Mother Road’s legacy. They built their own, one cold beer at a time.

This centennial year, GoRoute66 is proud to name The Broken Spoke Lounge the recipient of our “Best Dive Bar” award. Thirty-five years of neon, live music, karaoke, cold ones, and community — and they’re just getting started.

Thank you all for the photos that you provided. I have passed them on to the folks doing the ad for us. Hopefully they will use some of the ones provided along with onsite filming.
