Alpharetta lost a good one.
Colonel Robert Schmitz passed away on August 21 at 78. Around here everyone called him "Colonel," and if you spent any time at our bar you probably heard one of his stories. He had plenty, and he told every one of them well.
The Colonel enlisted in the Army in 1967, served in Vietnam, and later worked at the Pentagon during the Gulf War. He earned the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman Badge along the way. You'd never have known it unless you asked, because he was more interested in talking Hoosiers basketball, the Cardinals, the Vols, and his dalmatians.
He was married to Rachel for over 50 years and was proud of his five kids and seven grandkids. His family describes him as a simple man who found joy in everyday life. That's exactly who he was at our place.
This afternoon at 4:00 we're raising a glass to the Colonel. Come by, share a Colonel story, and help us send him off right. His seat won't feel the same.
His family asks that donations be made to K9s For Warriors in his honor.
Rest easy, Colonel. Thank you for your service and for all the stories.
