It's easy to look at this video and just see kids learning to fish.

I see something else.

I see future teachers helping the next generation learn to read.

Future firefighters running toward danger while everyone else runs away.

Future nurses comforting families on the hardest days of their lives.

Future engineers solving problems we haven't even imagined yet.

Future business owners creating jobs. Future soldiers serving our country. Future parents raising children who will make the world a little better than they found it.

Today they're learning how to bait a hook.

Tomorrow they'll learn how to lead a team.

One day they'll lead a company, coach a little league team, organize a community project, or change someone's life with a simple act of kindness.

That's what Cub Scouts is really about.

The fishing poles, campfires, pinewood derby cars, hikes, and silly songs are just the vehicle. Along the way they're quietly building confidence, resilience, leadership, and character.

A recent national study found that Eagle Scouts are significantly more likely to hold leadership positions, volunteer in their communities, live by strong values, and report that Scouting shaped the person they became. Nearly every Eagle Scout surveyed—99%—said Scouting had a positive influence on their life, and 98% credited it with improving their leadership ability.

Will every Cub Scout become an Eagle Scout?

No.

But every Cub Scout who sticks with it will leave with something far more important than a badge.

They'll leave believing they can make a difference.

And watching that journey begin... following that little blue shirt as they excitedly explore the world... may just be the greatest adventure a parent gets to experience before they spread their wings and head off on adventures of their own.

Today, they're catching fish.

Tomorrow, they'll be catching opportunities.

And I can't wait to see what each of them becomes.

🎉🌭 MEMBERS CLUB PICNIC – AUGUST 8! 🌭🎉

Calling all members! Grab your family (or bring a guest) and join us for an afternoon of great food, live music, games, and good company! ☀️🍔🎶 (this event is for our MEMBERS ONLY but we have a couple more up our sleeve that will be open to the public, keep your eyes open!)

🌭 The club will be serving:
• Hot dogs
• Cheeseburgers
• Chicken

🥗 Potluck Style: We kindly ask that everyone bring a salad, side dish, or dessert to share!

🍽️ Food will be served beginning at 2:00 PM

🎸 Live Music: Nitefall will be playing all your favorite classic hits and classic rock from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

🌧️🎣 Rain? What rain?!

It’s still a great day to stop by the Fish! 🍻

☀️ Chelsey is behind the bar until 5 PM, then Jacqui B takes over for the evening to keep the good times rolling.

🎱 The pool table is open tonight, so grab your friends and come shoot a few games.

🎣 And to our members… it’s a beautiful day to be fishing down at the pond… if you don’t mind getting a little “liquid sunshine.” 😜 The fish don’t seem to mind the rain!

There are some lessons you can only learn standing on the edge of a pond with a fishing rod in your hand.

Tonight at the West Springfield Fish & Game Club, I got to watch my child discover that catching a fish is actually the easy part. Getting it off the hook? That's where the real challenge begins.

We learned that turtles apparently love worms just as much as fish do. We learned that patience isn't just something adults tell kids to have—it's the secret ingredient to success. And we learned that what people call "luck" is often just being ready when the opportunity finally comes along.

But the best part wasn't the fish. It was watching confidence grow with every cast, every laugh, every question, and every new skill learned.

A huge thank you to the incredible volunteers at the West Springfield Fish & Game Club who donated their time, their knowledge, their equipment, and their encouragement. They baited hooks, untangled lines, celebrated every catch, and reminded our kids that the outdoors has a way of teaching lessons that last far beyond a single evening.

These are the moments our children will remember years from now—not because of the size of the fish they caught, but because someone believed in them enough to teach them how.

What a wonderful night.
