In a new feature for VICE, writer and photographer Frank L’Opez spends a day with FLO in her home neighbourhood of Bunga, travelling by boda-boda through Kampala's streets, visiting her local hair salon and heading out into the city's nightlife.

Along the way, FLO reflects on her upbringing, her work teaching brass instruments to children in Kampala, the personal experiences that shape her music and the making of *NAKATO*, her debut solo album on Hakuna Kulala.

From her background as a trumpet player with HHY & The Kampala Unit to her emergence as a singer and electronic producer, the feature offers an intimate portrait of an artist navigating different musical worlds while remaining closely connected to her roots.

Archival footage of an Alur agwara trumpet ensemble, performed by the Naguru Dakiri Ber Nebbi Community Cultural Group and recorded by Wade Patterson, Glendon Jones, Chris Zimmerman and Okello Kelo Sam outside Kampala in late 1994.

The towering wooden horns of the Alur are played in interlocking, hocketing patterns, with each instrument contributing a fragment of a larger melody. The resulting music is built from overlapping rhythmic and melodic cycles, creating a dense, constantly shifting collective sound.

This remarkable footage offers another glimpse into the musical traditions explored on the forthcoming release, Luo Sound of the Alur by Kucwiny Theatre Industry, featuring ensemble leader Cosmic Womola Ocowun and his musicians performing agwara alongside drums, voices and dance.

Out October 23 on Nyege Nyege Tapes, on limited-edition vinyl and digital.

New release from Kucwiny Theatre Industry.

From the Alur communities of northwestern Uganda comes agwara: a ceremonial music built from towering side-blown wooden horns, drums, voices, fiddles and ankle bells, arranged in dense hocketing patterns in which individual parts combine into a larger melodic structure.

Recorded under a tree near the school where ensemble leader Cosmic Womola Ocowun works as headmaster, Luo Sound of the Alur documents Kucwiny Theatre Industry performing this repertoire. Interlocking horn parts, repeated vocal phrases and cyclical drum patterns unfold as musicians and dancers move around the central percussionists.

Its repetitive structures invite comparison with minimalist composition, though here repetition functions within a ceremonial and participatory setting rather than as an autonomous formal device.

The effect is cumulative: a music that gathers force as it continues, drawing players, dancers and listeners into the same circular motion.

KinAct, seen through the lens of Mario Testino.

Founded by Congolese artist Eddy Ekete Mombesa, KinAct transforms the discarded matter of Kinshasa — plastic bottles, cans, tyres, wires and fragments of everyday life — into extraordinary living sculptures, performances and interventions.

Mario Testino photographed the collective in Kinshasa in 2023 as part of A Beautiful World, capturing the astonishing forms, materials and personalities that make up the KinAct universe.

Our own collaboration with KinAct began with their 2022 residency at Nyege Nyege HQ in Kampala, where the collective entered the studio and transformed costumes, tools and discarded materials into instruments and sound.

The resulting album, Kinshasa in Action, was released on Nyege Nyege Tapes alongside a photo zine documenting the wider visual and sculptural world around the project.
