Міністерство закордонних справ України вітає рішення San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC), який проводиться The Tasting Alliance, дискваліфікувати 15 виноробень з Росії з конкурсу 2025 року та утилізувати подані ними вина після того, як було встановлено, що вони не відповідають вимогам санкційного законодавства США, запровадженого у відповідь на повномасштабне вторгнення Росії в Україну.​​

Російські посадовці та медіа називали допуск своїх виноробень до конкурсу в Сан-Франциско політичним "проривом" і доказом того, що "бар’єри падають", відкрито вихваляючись складною логістикою та "сірими" схемами для ввезення вина до США попри дію обмежень на російський алкоголь.​​ Зокрема, до конкурсу були допущені кілька господарств, пов’язаних, за даними відкритих російських джерел, із так званою "винною імперією" Володимира Путіна на Чорному морі.

Дипломати з Consulate General of Ukraine in San Francisco, представники української громади та партнери в каліфорнійській винній спільноті звернули увагу організаторів на потенційні порушення санкцій та відповідні матеріали російських медіа.

В результаті організатори San Francisco International Wine Competition визнали, що російське вино було помилково допущено до участі в міжнародному конкурсі 2025 року, та дійшли висновку, що вони не мають права брати участь через санкції США, запроваджені після вторгнення Росії в Україну. Російські виноробні було відсторонено, їхні зразки не будуть оцінюватися.​​

Російські посадовці намагалися подати Сан-Франциско як доказ того, що для путінських вин “немає ізоляції”. Натомість це рішення демонструє протилежне: санкції працюють, а авторитетні американські інституції не готові ставати вітриною для Кремля, в той час як українські міста обстрілюють, а українські виноградники опиняються під окупацією чи знищуються.

🍇 28 жовтня стартує прийом заявок на грантову підтримку малих виноградарів і виноробів Одеської області. Ініціатива реалізується Продовольчою та сільськогосподарською організацією ООН (FAO Ukraine) у співпраці з Міністерством економіки, довкілля та сільського господарства України за фінансової підтримки Уряду Італії.

Участь у програмі можуть взяти зареєстровані в ДАР виноградарі та винороби, які обробляють від 2 до 50 гектарів виноградників Одещини.

Відібрані учасники зможуть отримати грантову підтримку у розмірі від 10 000 до 25 000 доларів США. Сума буде залежати від обсягів виробництва та обґрунтованих потреб.

Нова програма ФАО спрямована на:
🔹 розвиток виноробного сектору України шляхом розширення доступу до сучасного обладнання, якісного садивного матеріалу та технічної підтримки;
🔹 запровадження ринково орієнтованих підходів, які забезпечать сталий розвиток малих виробників.

Програма передбачає:
🔸 надання технічної підтримки, навчань та консультацій;
🔸 сприяння впровадженню географічних зазначень для підвищення конкурентоспроможності українських вин.

Overnight, a Russian drone attack destroyed a workshop and warehouse at the Aznauri winery in the Odesa region. Fortunately, the 50 employees on shift were evacuated in time, so the most important thing — human lives — was saved.

It's one of Ukraine's largest and most modern wineries, exporting products to over 20 countries. This is a deliberate attack on Ukraine's economy and civilian infrastructure.

Russia is a terrorist state. The world must see and act.

For the first time, WSET is publicly sharing the complete list of wines used in its 2024/25 Diploma tasting exams, offering a unique glimpse into the rigorous, globally recognised qualification.

WSET’s flagship Level 4 Diploma in Wines includes six units, three of which feature tasting exams:

D3: Wines of the World
D4: Sparkling Wines
D5: Fortified Wines
These units challenge students to analyse and evaluate a wide range of wines through blind tasting, supported by deep theoretical understanding. Exams took place between October 2024 and June 2025 at WSET Diploma centres around the world.

Simon Milroy MW, WSET Diploma Lead, Qualifications, said: “Our job is to present students with styles and quality levels that reflect the world of wine today, whether that’s a rare Blaufränkisch from Burgenland, Austria, or a commercial bestseller from South Eastern Australia.”

The line-up spans iconic and accessible wines alike – from Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2019 and Yellow Tail Chardonnay 2024 (both D3, May), to Harvey’s Bristol Cream (D5, June). All wines are blind tasted and selected by expert panels, including Masters of Wine and senior educators, to align with themes in the Diploma Specification.

The 2024/25 tasting papers featured wines from 12 countries, including France, Austria, Chile, Germany, Portugal, Australia and the USA, with flights constructed to test both classic knowledge and emerging trends.

In total, 42 wines were poured for tasting across the academic year:

Frog's Leap Winery: Where Whimsy Meets Wine-Making Excellence🐸🍷

A Leap of Faith: The Romantic Origins

The story behind the name is as delightful as the wines themselves. Before founding Frog's Leap in 1981, John Williams worked at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. The property he eventually purchased for his venture was once a frog farm, producing frogs for San Francisco's finest restaurants. In a stroke of whimsical genius, Williams combined his past at Stag's Leap with the property's amphibian heritage, and Frog's Leap was born.

The winery operates entirely on solar power and practices dry farming - a traditional technique that forgoes irrigation, forcing vines to dig deep into the soil for water and nutrients. This method conserves water and produces grapes with intense, complex flavours.

The Unexpected Charm

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of Frog's Leap is how it balances humour with hardcore winemaking expertise. Their motto, "Time's fun when you're having flies," appears on every cork, while their wines consistently rank among Napa's finest. The tasting room, housed in a beautifully restored 1884 ghost winery building, features elegant period details alongside playful frog-themed touches.

The winery maintains an organic garden that supplies its culinary program and local restaurants, creating a complete ecosystem where sustainability meets sophistication. This unusual approach of combining serious wine crafting with lighthearted charm has created one of Napa Valley's most memorable and beloved destinations.

In an industry often criticised for taking itself too seriously, Frog's Leap proves that excellence and enjoyment need not be mutually exclusive. It's a place where world-class wines emerge from sustainable practices, history meets innovation, and every visit feels like discovering a secret garden - complete with a few frogs, of course.

Tim Atkin MW's Rioja Report 2025: A Landmark Year

In this second edition of his unique tasting, Tim Atkin MW continues to champion Rioja's place among the world's most significant wine regions. As the region celebrates the 100th anniversary of its Denominación de Origen, the report showcases an unprecedented gathering of producers, with more than half a dozen new bodegas joining this year's selection.

Drawing from nearly 40 years of experience since his first visit to Rioja in 1988, Atkin's selections comprise First and Second Growths from his annual classifications, complemented by an exciting group of rising stars. The report particularly highlights Rioja's remarkable diversity, moving beyond traditional oak-aging classifications to focus on origin, terroir expression, and the region's mosaic of soil types and altitudes.

This year, White Rioja demonstrates particular excellence, with outstanding examples of Viura-based wines showing the region's often-overlooked potential in white wine production. These whites increasingly reflect their specific terroirs, with producers focusing on single plots and vineyard sites. They use precise oak work with combinations of French, American, and Hungarian barrels alongside traditional vessels like demijohns. Old vine, bush-trained vineyards under dry farming conditions produce particularly compelling results.

The comprehensive producer lineup spans from historic estates to boutique wineries. Traditional powerhouses like La Rioja Alta, S.A., Marqués de Murrieta, Remelluri, and Muga stand alongside dynamic newcomers such as Arizcuren, Sierra de Toloño, and Bodegas Bhilar. Notable highlights include the precision-driven wines from Abel Mendoza, the terroir-focused approach of Artuke Bodegas y Viñedos, and the consistently outstanding offerings from Remírez de Ganuza and Bodegas Roda.

The report captures the welcome camaraderie among producers, especially the younger generation that is transforming how the region promotes itself. From the high-altitude expressions of Pujanza and Victor Ausejo Viticultor to the distinctive wines of Berta Valgañón and Juan Carlos Sancha, this year's selection demonstrates why Rioja remains one of the world's most fascinating wine regions.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
