We understand that leaving Lost Soles might bring up a few feelings.

Sadness. Denial. Separation anxiety. A brief existential crisis. Perhaps even a little resentment towards your return ticket.

We’d love to tell you that we’ll be strong, but frankly, we’re going to miss you too.

And for completely shellfish reasons, we’d like you back.

If you need us, call us on our seashell. 🐚🕶️

You said it better than we could.

And considering how much we love a good story, that’s quite an achievement.

Five reviews. Five stars. And a rather enthusiastic consensus about our tuna. Apparently, it’s developing a reputation of its own.

But what makes us happiest is seeing our team mentioned alongside the food, the atmosphere and the view. Because behind every lovely afternoon at Lost Soles are the people who make it happen.

To everyone who has taken the time to leave us a few words, thank you. We read every one, share them with our team, and occasionally develop rather inflated egos.

We’ll try to remain humble. No promises.

Knock, knock, knockin’ on heaven’s door. 🎶

Although, from where we’re sitting, heaven seems to have left the door wide open.

Bare feet, good music, the Indian Ocean for company, and another evening that reminds us why we do things a little differently here.

Live music, cold drinks, and a little rock ’n’ roll beneath the Zanzibar stars.

The strength and flexibility of palm trees is a beautiful reminder to bend with the winds of life, flow gracefully through it all, and still remain standing.

Here in Jambiani, the coconut trees have had centuries to perfect the art. They sway, they surrender, they weather the storms. And when the wind settles, they return to their favourite occupation: doing absolutely nothing in the sunshine.

We rather admire their philosophy.

Pole pole. Slowly, slowly.

The Swahili have been trying to tell us all along: rushing ruins perfectly good things. Food. Mornings. Holidays. Conversations. And, apparently, slowies.

At Lost Soles, we’re rather fond of anything that takes its sweet time. 😉

The morning has softened all the edges.

There is a particular kind of luxury in meeting the day before it becomes useful. Before the messages, the decisions, the arrangements. When coffee is still an event, bare feet are appropriate attire, and nobody has yet suggested you should be doing something more productive.

We have a kink for early mornings. Jambiani keeps encouraging it.

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
Zanzibar seems to have finally got the memo.

More and more cities are now flying direct to the island. No elaborate choreography through three airports. No losing the will to live under fluorescent lighting in departures. Just increasingly straight lines between where you are and where you’d rather be.

Zanzibar is suddenly connected directly to more of the world than ever before. Fewer stopovers. More direct routes. An island that once required a little plotting is becoming remarkably easy to reach.

Which is rather dangerous information to give someone who was already looking for an excuse.

We lock everything.

Our houses. Our cars. Our gates. Our phones. Then we add alarms, cameras, beams, passwords and insurance to the locks, and call the resulting feeling normal.

In Jambiani, I started sleeping with my doors open.

It took me a while to notice what an extraordinary sentence that is.

Not because Zanzibar is somehow exempt from crime. It isn’t. But because sleeping with an open door requires something most of us rarely think about until we feel it again: trust.

And the body behaves differently with trust.

You sleep differently. You wake differently. The ocean is still there in the room with you. Morning arrives without having to be let in.

Perhaps that is the real seduction of island life. Not escaping your life.

Discovering how much of it you’ve been bracing against.

The irony wasn’t lost on us.

A ship in need of repair, hauled out of the Indian Ocean and onto the sand directly in front of a place called Lost Soles.

For a day she sat outside us, enormous and strangely vulnerable, while her hull was worked on before she returned to the water.

There is something almost indecent about seeing a ship out of water. You get to see what the sea usually keeps to itself: the scars, the wear, the underside of a life spent travelling.

She hadn’t lost her way.

She just needed somewhere to stop.

The fire pit has seen plenty of evenings.

This Saturday, we’re giving it a heartbeat.

Ten drums arrive at Lost Soles. The fire gets lit. The moon gets full. And somewhere between keeping your own rhythm and hearing everyone else’s, something shifts.

Maybe that’s why humans have always done this.
