MIKE PIPS TONY IN A HIGH SCORING BATTLE AT ROYAL LAKESIDE

Our first game of the week saw us travel up to play Royal Lakeside. Like Bang Pakong, it is maybe another 10 minutes up the road but is well worth the extra travelling time. Despite how quiet most courses are at the moment, we still managed 4 groups to take on what is a very popular course.
The course itself was in excellent condition with greens that are fast and true, fairways like a carpet and well-kept bunkers. All was set up for a high scoring round and for 2 golfers in particular, that is exactly what they produced. Mike Babb, playing off 26, had one of those days where everything fell into place and he carded 2 halves of 22 points. Tony Cliff, playing off a handicap of 12 shot a 5 over par round of 77 to come within one point of catching Mike. Great golf by both Mike and Tony. Big hitter Alan Smith was 3rd with 37 with Billy Buchanan completing the podium with 35.

PAUL PIPS BRENDAN IN A CLOSE BATTLE AT BANGPAKONG

Bang Pakong is maybe another 10 minutes up the road but at an all-in price of 1600 baht it is well worth the extra drive. Although we started off in brilliant sunshine, you could see the dark clouds building up and it wasn’t long before the rumbling of thunder could be heard. When we got to the turn there was severe lightning and our groups headed for shelter. Amazingly there was not one drop of rain and after about 10 minutes the lightning had disappeared and we were able to carry on and complete the round.
As for the golf, there were 2 stand out scores. Paul Longstaff went out in 19 but came home with 24 points on the back 9 to total 43. Brendan Kane, had 2 halves of 21 to be pipped by 1 point. Third and fourth places were decided on a countback with Glen Elsworth and Rich Moore scoring 38. Glen`s 21 on the back 9 was Just enough to beat Rich who had 2 nines of 19 points.

NIGEL LEADS THE WAY AT A VERY QUIET GREENWOOD

Greenwood was the venue for our first game of the week. There had obviously been a lot of rain overnight as the ground was very wet underfoot with little to no run on the fairways. We were the only society present and when I asked the starter how many players Greenwood had for the day, the answer was 30. Two months ago, it would have been 230!
With the course playing long, it certainly suited the longer hitters. Nigel Henson`s length certainly paid dividends as he came home with 36 points which was one point better than Russell Blatchford with George Mueller just edging out Audun Jensen for the remaining podium place.

VITO RUNS AWAY WITH A GREAT SCORE AT BANGPRA

Bangpra was the venue for our last game of the week on another day that was well supported on another course that was very quiet. Given a 9.00 tee time we were told to tee off as soon as we arrived with no one in front or behind. Emmanuele Maume a.k.a Emme arrived from Australia at 11 pm on Thursday and was waiting for the transport to Bangpra at 7.15. Great effort and her dedication was rewarded with 4th place. Also, a fond farewell to Mal Foord who`s visit was a short one but hopefully he will be back before long.
Vito Cirelli is a very steady player who`s handicap seldom varies but after today`s round, he won`t be playing off 15 anymore. His 41 points included a front 9 of 24 points – outstanding effort. Father and son Windsor have been in good form and that good form continued by taking 2nd and 3rd places.

TONY WINS A TIGHT CONTEST AT PATTAVIA

For our mid-week game, we took the trip up to Pattavia which is another course which has lowered its prices quite dramatically to accommodate low season. The course was in good condition although the greens haven’t reached the speeds that we are used to. We were thankful to be given an early tee time because as soon as we had finished the heavens opened and, on the way back, we were going through torrential rain.
It was a close battle for top spot with 3 cards being returned on 35 points. It was Tony Fagan`s 20 on the back nine which proved to be the best back nine followed by Russell Blatchford and John Coetzee with George Mueller taking the final podium slot.
A special word of thanks to Russell Blatchford for collecting and collating the score cards whilst your truly played in the last 4 ball.
