Scorn not his simplicity ❤️
🎶 On This Day | 1984
Ireland lost Luke Kelly, the unmistakable voice of The Dubliners.
Born on Dublin’s Sheriff Street, Luke Kelly brought a rare intensity to Irish folk music. A master of the 5-string banjo and a singer of fierce conviction, he did not simply perform songs. He inhabited them. Whether singing Raglan Road or The Town I Loved So Well, his voice carried lived experience, political conscience, and deep compassion for ordinary people.
Luke died aged just 43 after a long illness, but the mark he left was permanent. He helped shape how Ireland hears itself. Proud, questioning, defiant, and humane.
Decades on, his voice still feels close. As if it never really left.
