Born in Bordeaux and educated in America, Sacha Lichine began worki

ng at his family’s former property, Chateau Prieure Lichine, during the summers of his youth. At age 23, Sacha’s first enterprise was organizing luxury wine tours in France which helped facilitate the establishment of Sacha Lichine Estate Selections for wines from the Rhone. He also worked as a Sommelier at Anthony’s Pier 4 Restaurant and then with an importer/ distributor/ wholesaler both of which were in Boston. Sacha then went on to work for Southern Wine & Spirits in California and in 1987 he established a distributorship on Saint Lucia called Caribbean Chateau. During the same year, a defining moment in Sacha’s career came about when he started running Prieure Lichine at age 27. In 1990 Sacha started a negociant business, Borvin, which he still operates focusing on selecting the best wines from Bordeaux. Recognizing the importance of innovation in an increasingly varied wine industry around the world, Sacha developed a line of new world wines from France, Sacha Lichine International/ Vins Sans Frontiers which today consists of a range of blended wines from the Languedoc and varietals from other regions in France. A pivotal moment for Sacha was his 2006 acquisition of Chateau d’Esclans in Provence. In keeping with his uncanny sense of innovation, Sacha felt that Rose had strong developmental opportunities to become more serious from a production standpoint in addition to being served and consumed more broadly. The result to this foresight energized by an abiding passion for making and promoting great wine, has resulted in building a world class brand while providing a strong contribution to unprecedented growth within the Rose category. This has made for a remarkable chapter in Sacha’s dynamic career to date. Patrick Leon has unparalleled experience in making among the great wines of the world. A Bordeaux native with an extensive education in Oenology, Patrick studied this subject in his home town as well as business management. The former, in particular, led him to establishing and running the Centre Etudes & Informations Oenologiques from 1965 through the following seven years. In 1972 Patrick would join Alexis Lichine & Company in Bordeaux beginning as a purchasing manager for its French wines. Additionally he held positions as a Technical Manager & Co General Manager of Château Lascombes Crus Classé in Margaux & Château Castéra in Lesparre-Médoc. Patrick also worked with Alexis Lichine on developing content for his books. These positions went through the mid eighties at which point Patrick would work with Baron Phillipe de Rothschild for nearly twenty years. For Baron Phillipe de Rothschild, he would serve as a Managing Director, overseeing technical departments including the company’s vineyards and winemaking facilities for Chateau Mouton Rothschild, d’armailhac, Clerc Milon, le Petit Mouton, Aile d’Argent, Opus One in California, Almaviva in Chile, Domaine de Lambert & Barn’ Arques in the Languedoc, Mouton Cadet in Bordeaux as well as other wines in the BphR portfolio including Escudo Rojo in Chile. Patrick’s wide breadth of experience and knowledge has established the foundation to becoming a consulting oenologist and working with Sacha Lichine in this capacity. Towards that end, Patrick has been instrumental in overseeing the wine making for Chateau d’Esclans and Vins Sans Frontiers. Patrick Leon’s guidance and his enduring counsel have made an immeasurable difference to making all the Lichine wines as great as they are.

CÔTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ

Whispering Angel

As a negociant and vinificateur (winery), Caves d’esclans identifies vineyards, grapes and wines from château d’esclans as well as local growers to make what has reputedly become the world’s greatest rosé. As our objective is to obtain the best quality grapes and wines, we have created relationships with the local grape growers, committed beside Caves d’esclans, whose vineyards are treated with the same high standards of quality as are the vineyards of Château d’esclans.

CÔTES DE PROVENCE

Déesse Diane (Red)
As noted by Jane Anson, “a lovely wine providing a rich example of silky dark fruits and garrigue-scented spice that keeps the house element of emphasising pleasure”.

Reviews

“I was not expecting this wine to be so polished and honed when I first tasted it. The whole flavour from start to finish is a joy and the tannins are a little raw… This is a very smart, modern wine that would impress all-comers with its élan and build-quality.”
Matthew Jukes

“Very fine deep rich red, rich, spicy and briary red/black fruits on the nose showing real Provence “garrigue” and finely extracted fruit with good tannins to firm it up, both firmness and suppleness of texture on the palate and the “restraint” from the Bordeaux influence does not lessen the exuberant Provence fruit.”

Steven Spurrier

“Confident and spicy with real spirit.”
Jancis Robinson
