Sigrid Storråda´s little Pie (Dessert with a history lesson)

Forest berry pie with an almond blanket, served with fresh whipped cream.
As mistress of Gautland, Sigrid was highly sought after by lesser kings, and two of her suitors were so persistent that she burned them alive! After this, she became known as “Storråda.”

Another king she had no objection to marrying was Norway’s King Olav Tryggvason. However, when they were to become engaged, Sigrid refused to accept Christianity and received a slap for her troubles. A huge mistake on Olav’s part, as Sigrid went on to marry the Danish King Sven Tveskägg and convinced him to go to war with Olav.

And so it was—the Norwegian king never slapped another woman, as he fell at the Battle of Svolder in the year 1000. Perhaps not directly due to this deed, but thanks to Sigrid’s bold initiatives, we can today enjoy a fruit-filled pie in her honor.

Aifurs famous Mead truffles!
It is unlikely that the Vikings had chocolate in the form we know today. However, the cocoa bean predates the Swedish Iron Age by a significant margin. The ancient Olmecs were harvesting cocoa beans along the Amazon as early as 3,000 years ago.
At Aifur, we like to imagine that Leif Eiríksson earned the name “The Successful” partly because, during his encounters with the Indigenous peoples of North America, he might have had the chance to taste these remarkable beans.

Here are two of our meads from Poland!
Polish meads often feature buckwheat honey, a unique type of honey that isn’t available in Sweden.

Mazurski
A nuanced, spiced, and sweet flavor with notes of honey, marzipan, and red apples. Made according to a traditional Polish recipe.

Biesiadny
A spiced mead with a clear golden color, a wine-like taste, and unusually dry for a Polish mead. Biesiadny pairs well with almost any food but is especially suited to pork and poultry.

Mead (honey wine) is the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage and one of the most delicious. Central Europe has a rich tradition of mead-making, and these two are perfect examples!

Up for some sweets?! Try our Apple cake Ansgar! Ansgar also known as the Apostle of Scandinavia, was a German monk, missionary, archbishop, and saint. He first arrived in Birka in 829, following a dramatic journey marked by robbery and assault, to proclaim the word of White Christ. He stayed there until 831 before returning to Hamburg and Bremen. However, 20 years later, the heathens dissolved Ansgar’s small church, prompting him to return to Birka. It can be assumed that Ansgar partook sparingly of the honey wine, favoring instead the hazel and honey cake.
