The Atlantic. A current embracing the Old and New Worlds, always changing and in constant movement, like the artists presenting their works in this unique space. Rox Lawson, Virginia Fiorini, Karen Aarre and Marina Muñoz Viada left their respective native lands of the River Plate, the fjords and the Castillian planes, to move to the beautiful coast of Cascais. Four artists united by their love of the sea, their friendship and the creative urge that they share. Four views evoking the essence of the ocean on each canvas with the forms and colours of nature imagined by the artists. Marina Muñoz Viada’s collages are filled with indigo and ochre in constant movement. Iridescent silhouettes appear, as the artist’s tribute to those settle the waves. “The ocean in Portugal is for surfing, not sailing”, she says. Her figures and materials evoke the essence of this unique coast. Rox Lawson explores the textures of foam, seabeds and the thrust of water. Her springs and lakes have the force of primeval Creation. She expresses the forces of nature, inspired by the oceans of her travels, from Buenos Aires to Sintra. Virginia Fiorini depicts with her camera the immensity of the ocean, like a universe where the external elements are diluted by time. Boats left hanging, caravels adrift, beings merging into the sand, reality or dream. From Buenos Aires to Rio, to Cascais – a perfect ocean, whose waters on this side are tinged with melancholy. Karen Aarre transforms canvasses into metaphors, evoking legends of other lands. With delicate strokes, she captures the light of the Atlantic on a rock, on a cleft, on a current that the night raises to the stars. Her marine horizons describe the fragility of the moment with poetic and harmonious strokes.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1974. She studied Advertising and Marketing, and has a postgraduate degree in Branding. She worked for over 12 years in several multinational companies in Argentina.
In 2008 she moved to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where she started her passion for photography. Captivated by the colours, the light and many shapes of that marvelous city, she composed several photographic series on the Carioca beaches.
Two years later, destiny led her to the other side of the ocean, in Portugal where you can feel the great cultural influence the two countries have had on each other, as well as the influence of the sea on both peoples.
In this body of work, the most important element is the ocean. It is interpreted as an immensity, all encompassing and dominating the other elements.
This different view of the ocean invites us to contemplate our relationship to it: This element to which we are linked to the point at which our lives depend so much on its presence, or its absence. For her artistic work, she uses digital photography in a minimalist style, reducing reality to what is essential, stripping it of the superfluous.

Swiss Argentine artist, born in Buenos Aires in 1969.
She studied Hotel Management in Buenos Aires, and studied languages in Switzerland, Germany and France. She was influenced from an early age by her artistic family, and attended a variety of art courses in Argentina and Europe learning pottery, furniture restoration and oil painting. She now lives and works in Sintra, Portugal.
In the Ocean series, she shows a combination of vibrant colours, textures, energy and intuition, in memory of a life crossing continents and oceans. No material is discarded, as she tends to use anything that is around in the search to create new textures. The materials she uses range from gesso to paper, cloth, polyurethane, oils, waxes and varnishes.
Inspired by the forces of nature and its colours, she starts her work with no specific idea in mind; she likes experimenting different techniques as she goes along, letting her creativity flow. She uses art to channel her excess of energy in a therapeutic way.
Her creativity emerges as an original and expressive work, building a universe of textures and feelings on canvas.
Recently she exhibited in Placio Foz in Lisbon and Palacio Cadaval in Evora.
