José Miguel Rodriguez and Axel López are Cruz Roja Americana Capítulo de Puerto Rico volunteers who are currently helping communities across the island recover after Hurricane Fiona's devastation. They, like many of our local volunteers, don’t have water or electricity, and yet, are helping provide critical supplies to people in shelters and in areas on the island hit hardest by the storm.
For José, it fills him with great satisfaction to be able to help people and do so with love and affection, even if he and Axel are personally affected. ➡️ “Me llena de satisfacción poder asistir a la familia, a pesar de que también somos afectados de una forma u otra, pero nos llena de satisfacción que el trabajo que hacemos lo hacemos con amor y con cariño para poder ayudar a los que necesitan.”
José is a shelter manager and has been volunteering with the Red Cross since 2014. His first operation was during Hurricane Irma in 2017, during which he served as a nurse and visited different communities around the island. Axel also began his volunteer journey during Hurricane Irma, working alongside José at the chapter and supporting the response. He now helps with coordinating and distributing the critical supplies needed for communities affected by disasters.
After experiencing the wrath of Hurricane Maria, they put on their Red Cross vest to help people affected. They may have experienced their own hardships during the storm but they knew there were others who needed their time, commitment and support during such a challenging time.
Words cannot express how grateful we are for volunteers like José and Axel, who selflessly give their time for others.
