Today, conVIDA is a little quieter.
Many of you know that conVIDA is a Mid-Century Modern Gin Lounge, but not everyone knows why.
My mother was only 19 years old when she married in New York. There, she hosted cocktail parties in her apartment, sewing beautiful dresses for herself and her cousins so they could go out, dance, celebrate life, and create memories together.
When she returned to Puerto Rico, she brought pieces of that life back with her: her Mid-Century furniture, her Victrola, her Culver glassware, her punch bowl, her fine china, and the recipes that would become part of our family's story.
One of those recipes was Chicken ร la King.
She made it for me when I was a little girl. It was my comfort food long before I knew what comfort food meant.
Everything that conVIDA is todayโthe gin, the cocktail culture, the American-inspired dishes, the vintage glassware, the spirit of gathering around a tableโhas its roots in her.
This lounge was never just a business. It has always been a love letter to my mother.
It is with a heavy heart that I share that she has passed away.
While my family and I grieve this loss, I find comfort knowing that a piece of her lives on every day within these walls, in every cocktail poured, every meal shared, and every guest welcomed through our doors.
Thank you, Mom, for teaching me that hospitality is love made visible.
