The exact origins of the game of snooker are, similar to billiards, not recorded with exact definition, though what is certainly known is that it developed, from a variety of table ball games, in British Officer's Mess rooms in India around the 1870's. The game of 'black pool', played with fiteeen reds and a black ball, was supplemented by the addition of yellow, green and pink balls, with blue an

d brown being introduced later on. On one occasion, a Colonel Sir Neville Chamberlain's Devonshire Regiment (he being no relation to the WW2 Prime Minister) was visited in India by an officer who had been trained at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. This officer explained that a first year cadet at the Academy was referred to as a 'snooker'. Later, when one of the players failed to pocket a coloured ball, Chamberlain shouted to him: 'Why, your'e a regular snooker!' He then pointed out the meaning and they were all referred to as 'snookers'. Subsequently, the name was adopted for the game itself, and Chamberlain became a fervent promoter of the game throughout his postings in India, particularly at Ooatacamund, where the game became the speciality of the 'Ooty Club', with rules posted in the billiard room. However, it wasn't until the 1920's and 30's that snooker's popularity rivalled that of Billiards, and during the past thirty years it has become a popular mass sport attracting large amounts of money and TV coverage.
