SEC. BAUTISTA: LTO FRONTLINE OF ROAD SAFETY PROMOTION
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) plays a crucial role in making sure Philippine roads are safe for motorists and pedestrians alike and must act with urgency by advocating road safety to eliminate road fatalities and injuries.
During the LTO Regional Directors’ Conference on Thursday, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista called on LTO Regional Directors to be at the frontline of road safety advocacy by prioritizing “defensive driving education” and by keeping vehicles roadworthy.
“You must remember that your agency is not merely charged with the issuance of driver’s licenses, motor vehicle registration, and vehicle plates. The higher dimension of your mandate is keeping our roads safe,” Secretary Bautista told LTO Regional Directors.
“Try to understand the urgency of road safety promotion. One fatality due to a road crash is, for me, too many,” he added.
Secretary Bautista urged the LTO officers to be reminded of the agency’s mantra—ensure the roads are safe.
“The LTO is at the frontline of this advocacy. The higher dimension of your mandate is keeping our roads safe,” he said.
Data from the United Nations (UN) show that 11,000 deaths are recorded annually in the Philippines because of road crashes due to drunk driving, overspeeding, texting while driving, and human error.
