ULYSSES' LITTLE SISTER
by Harold Cuevas de Mesa
The winds are howling like an angry wolf
All are inside their houses
Some are unfortunate to be homeless
Lying in wet streets and dark alleys
All are afraid of the wrath of nature
and an instantaneous disaster
that might arrive unpredictably.
The tin roofs are on the verge of danger
from the claws of a monstrous wind
crawling like a zilla on our housetop
The eye of an uninvited guest
is ready to play peekaboo with you and me
and sn**ch our kids at the comfort of their bunks.
The trees are oscillating and about to be unrooted
The lamppost are flickering and about to lean on the ground
All the things that has no weight are flying like a kite without a thread.
The rain is hovering like a dandelion knives amidst the frantic night.
In the middle of the storm surge, a rug doll in the cobblestone is tenderly sleeping after she lighted the last stick of her matches.
After she imagined the sumptuous food that was serve in a humble table on Christmas eve together with her dead mother and incarcerated father.
After the recollection of the warm embrace of her grandmother who recently passed away in this pandemic.
After seeing the fancy lights in the carnival and the toys and gifts that are waiting for her in the castle on a cloud.
She was surprised to see her long lost brother dancing like a nutcracker in the wind -- he was kidnapped by two men who sells organs to the hospitals.
"Ulysses, take me with you, I'm ready to go. Don't you ever leave me again."
Then the heavy rain and the strong winds comforted her like an evening star.
She fell asleep
like an angel,
With curly hair
and rosy cheeks
An innocent smile of an orphaned child.
Tomorrow
The sun will rise
All the villagers will be busy to fix their roofs
and broken windows.
Rise and shine,
We all survived the storm!
But sadly
There is a lifeless body in the pavement
Wet, cold and stiff.
