โš ๏ธ ADVISORY | MT. KANLAON MODERATELY EXPLOSIVE ERUPTION

At 7:33 A.M. today, July 9, 2026, Mt. Kanlaon generated a moderately explosive eruption. The event follows after the heavy rainfall brought by the southwest monsoon, enhanced by Typhoon Bavi.

The public, particularly residents of communities that may be affected by ashfall, is advised to stay indoors whenever possible, wear face masks or damp cloths over the nose and mouth when going outside, protect the eyes with goggles or eyeglasses, close doors and windows to prevent ash from entering homes, and avoid unnecessary travel in ashfall-affected areas. Those with respiratory conditions, children, older adults, and pregnant women should take extra precautions.

Residents, especially those living near river channels and other hazard-prone areas around Mt. Kanlaon, are likewise advised to remain vigilant for possible rain-induced lahars and other volcanic hazards. Continue to monitor official advisories from PHIVOLCS, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), and your respective Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (LDRRMOs), and strictly follow evacuation and safety instructions issued by local authorities.

As African Swine Fever (ASF) continues to make headlines, many consumers are asking the same question: Is it still safe to eat pork? The short answer is yesโ€”provided the pork comes from legitimate, inspected sources and is properly handled and thoroughly cooked.

African Swine Fever is a viral disease that affects domestic and wild pigs, but it is not a disease that infects humans. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), there is no evidence that people can contract ASF through eating pork or through contact with infected pigs. (Woah!โ ๏ฟผ)

However, while ASF does not threaten human health, it poses a serious risk to the livestock industry. The disease spreads rapidly among pigs and can cause high mortality, leading to major economic losses, disruptions in pork supply, and hardship for farmers and communities that depend on swine production. (Woah!โ ๏ฟผ)

Consumers should also understand that food safety and animal disease control are different issues. Meat from sick or uninspected animals should never enter the food chain. Always buy pork from reputable markets, licensed meat vendors, or establishments that comply with food safety regulations. Proper cooking and hygienic food handling remain essential practices for preventing foodborne illnesses in general. (World Health Organizationโ ๏ฟผ)

The fight against ASF is not about creating fearโ€”it is about protecting our hog industry, supporting the livelihoods of farmers, and preventing the virus from spreading further. By relying on verified information instead of misinformation, we can make informed decisions that protect both public confidence and the agricultural sector.

The truth is clear: African Swine Fever is dangerous to pigsโ€”not to people. Stay informed, support responsible farming and food safety practices, and help stop the spread of misinformation.
