Breaking Misconceptions: OIL-BASED PERFUMES or ALCOHOL-BASED PERFUMES?
Here’s a breakdown to clear up the misconceptions—grab your tea and read on.
I’m often asked by potential customers if our perfumes are “oil-based,” and I find it a difficult question to answer because there are many misconceptions in the market. The substances that give a perfume its fragrance are oils (essential oils like rose, bergamot, neroli, and citronella). Some perfume oils are diluted in a neutral (fragrance-free) carrier oil. This is also considered a perfume oil and is the correct description of an “oil-based perfume,” where the actual fragrance oil is diluted with a neutral carrier oil.
However, most commercial brands prefer to use alcohol as the base in which the perfume oil is mixed. These are called alcohol-based perfumes.
So, what are the essential differences?
Oil-Based Perfumes
Perfume oils have an oil base, which is a neutral and odorless carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil. These perfumes are commonly known as “skin scents” because the fragrance deepens as body temperature gradually increases. The oil keeps the fragrance close to the skin, allowing for subtle projection—only you and those close to you will experience the natural aromas. The moisturizing properties of the oils are an added bonus, making them perfect for dry skin. This type of perfume cannot be sprayed onto the skin; it usually comes in a bottle with an applicator for dabbing onto the skin.
Alcohol-Based Perfumes
Most commercial branded perfumes are alcohol-based (usually ethanol), where fragrance oils are mixed with alcohol. The alcohol helps the fragrance molecules evaporate around you, allowing for stronger projection. Alcohol-based perfumes also highlight certain ingredients at different times, enabling you to experience the different top, middle, and base notes. They offer a wide variety of choices, and with their stronger projection, a single spritz can go a long way.
