SPORTS OVER SCREENS 🏀
The Department of Education (DepEd) is planning to strengthen physical education and school sports programs as part of efforts to encourage students to spend less time on online games and become more physically active.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara said DepEd is looking at ways to make PE and sports more engaging for learners, particularly as online gaming continues to become a major part of young people’s leisure time.
The department wants schools to offer students more activities they can enjoy outside screens, including sports and other physical activities that can promote fitness, discipline, teamwork, and healthy social interaction.
The initiative is part of DepEd’s broader efforts to address concerns surrounding excessive screen time and gaming among learners. Rather than simply discouraging students from playing online games, the department is looking at providing meaningful alternatives that can compete for their time and attention.
Angara emphasized the importance of giving learners opportunities to discover activities where they can develop their skills, build friendships, and remain physically active.
Strengthening school sports could also give talented young athletes more opportunities to train and participate in competitions while making physical activity a more consistent part of students’ school experience.
For students, the message is not simply to put the phone down, but to have something worthwhile to pick up instead.
Whether it is basketball, volleyball, athletics, dance, or another physical activity, schools can become spaces where students discover interests that extend beyond the digital world.
As DepEd works to strengthen its PE and sports programs, the goal is to create healthier, more active, and more engaged learners while giving young Filipinos more ways to grow beyond the screen.
