MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

Present always, and in all ways

The story is told about a wife who asked the maid: “It’s been one month since you’ve been with us. How are you?” The maid replied: “Oh, I’m very happy ma’am because you all treat me like kapamilya (one family), and also because your husband treats me like a kapuso (one heart)!”
—————-
In today’s Gospel (Matthew 28:16-20) Jesus, the Christ, before He ascended to heaven, assured His disciples (and us) that He is not only a kapamilya (one family), and also a Kapuso (one heart), but a kasama (one with us) always, and till the end of the world. Come to think of it, that’s all we need to know and remember as we go through and whatever we go through in life! Yes, enough for us to know that He is with us and He is one with us!
—————-
Aug. 15, 1984 was some kind of an Ascension moment for me when I boarded a plane for South Korea for my mission assignment. It was my first international flight, going to the great unknown. It was a tearful goodbye for me, my family, and friends at the airport, not knowing when and if I’ll ever see them again. The only assurance was the Lord’s promise: “I am with you, and I go before you, always. Come follow me.” I’ve had many goodbyes hence and thence, but that was one of my biggest goodbyes, made bearable and acceptable because of the Lord’s promise, “I am with you always till the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20).
—————-
Why must there be goodbyes? Because of mission. In everything that happens, there is a reason, there is a mission. All goodbyes, whether to things or persons, are reasons and/or seasons for moving on. Goodbyes should lead to greater mission, not stagnation. Focus not on the separation, but on the mission, so that we can meaningfully move on.
—————-
For the past 20 years or so, I have lived at the Mission House here in Christ the King where our oversees Filipino missionaries come and go. We have about 120 Filipino SVD missionaries now working in 40 countries worldwide. The Mission House is some kind of a hello-goodbye place where we welcome returning missionaries and send off our departing missionaries. It is the place for joyful reunions and tearful goodbyes. All for, with and through the Lord, the reason for all that we are and for all that we are doing. The greatest and the only assurance are Jesus’ words: “I am with you always.” Yes, God is with us always, and He blesses all of our hellos and goodbyes.
—————-
We send off missionaries with their mission cross, along with the words: “Behold the cross, your constant companion in your travels, your only consolation in your work and in your sorrows, your companion in sickness, your companion in death.” I don’t really know who said it, but I hold on to these words: “It is only bodies that are separated, but hearts remain united especially in Him for whom the sacrifices mode of leaving all that is dearest.”
—————-
It is always a very touching moment when we entrust our departing missionary to Mama Mary with a Marian song. Not much words are spoken after that, but the assurance ls there: It’s the Lord whom we serve, Mama Mary is with us, and we hope to meet again, in His time.
—————-
“Angels can fly not so much because they have wings, but because they carry no burdens.” Here’s praying that we be freed from burdens that tie us down and imprison us. Let us continue to pray to the Risen Lord to set our spirits free and to cleanse our hearts of sin, fear, attachments, apathy, and shortsightedness. May we all experience our personal resurrection cm ascension as we journey on.
—————-
Received this text message from Bishop Marlo Peralta, D.D.: “There is a resurrection of the body which will happen on the last day, and there is a resurrection of the heart which can happen every day.” Amen!
—————-
Focus on the Lord, not on the load. Let us learn to rise above worldly noise and chatter, and ascend into His presence as we get bombarded and dismayed by worldly cares.
—————-
At the Ascension, the Lord left us with a mission: “Go to the whole world and preach the Gospel to all creation.” (Mark 16:15) And we are reminded that after doing our mission, we have a final destination—Heaven.
—————-
A moment with the Lord:
Lord, thank you for the blessed assurance that you are with us always, and in all ways. Amen.

MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

The comforter

The story is told about a worried wife who called her friend, saying she suspected her husband was with some other woman because it was already late, and he wasn’t home yet. Her friend’s reply was: “Will you please stop thinking negative! Maybe he just met an accident or, maybe, he had a heart attack, okay?”
—————-
In today’s Gospel (John 14:15-21), Jesus promised that He will give us an Advocate helper, who will be with us always and who will comfort us. The Holy Spirit, the Paraclete or the Comforter is the one who guides and enlightens us. May we, too, become helpers and comforters to one another. Are you a source of comfort and strength to others, or are you a source of discomfort and hurts?
—————-
It is so consoling and comforting to know that the Lord is with us always. “In a little while you will see me, but you still see me, because I live, and you will live in me.” (John 14:19) In His farewell discourse, Jesus took the trouble of repeating over and over His promise that He would not abandon us or leave us as orphans. Yes, we have the blessed assurance that He will be with us always. That’s clear. But the question is: are we with Him, always?
—————-
“In a little while” is a beautiful phrase that is loaded with hope. Suffering is not forever. Bad people are not forever. Suckers and milkers are not forever. In a little while our country will move on toward greater heights. In a little while it will be proven again that it pays to be good, and that crime does not pay. Keep believing. Keep hoping. Keep praying. Keep working on love.

—————-
It’s May once again, the beautiful month of May, dedicated to Mama Mary. I remember how, as kids, we would spend our summer days in Bani, Pangasinan, climbing trees, swimming in the river, going to the barrios looking for spiders, or just frolicking in the summer sun. But the afternoons also found us gathering flowers and going to the church to offer our love and gratitude to the Blessed Mother. It was a beautiful practice, the memory of which to this day I keep in my mind and in my heart. May we not forget Mama Mary, our Mother.
—————-
Today is Mother’s Day. How many mothers are forgotten or are taken for granted by their children? Worse, how many mothers are hurt by their children? One time an elderly woman came to me, crying and telling me that, perhaps, it was better for her to die already so that she would not be a burden to her children anymore. She went on to say that her children hardly called or visited her, and if ever they did, all she heard were their complains, their miseries, and their never-ending squabbles and quarrels among themselves. The greatest pain for any mother is to know that her children will not be all right and will not have peace with each other after she is gone. A mother does not need much to be happy. All she needs is love and assurance from her children, her “little ones.” Have you called, have you visited, have you hugged your mother lately? Better do it now, before it’s too late.
—————-
I hold in my heart many lessons I learned from my Mama. But what I remember most as a child was her constant admonition to endure and be patient because everything is passing, and that things will become better—in a little while. I still could hear her words: “Itepel yo labat (just endure)”; “mandasal kayo labat (just pray); “mankalakal kayo (be good).”
—————-
Some years ago, I learned a song titled “Walk in the World for Me” (A Healing Affair of the Heart by Deanna Edwards): “Walk in the world for me, sing a happy melody, and keep my memory, not far away; may you find that life will bring all the best of everything; take special care of you, for me today.” Words of Jesus, words of Mama Mary, and works of Mama that I hold dear in my heart to this very day.
—————-
The month of May is the month of Mama Mary, a woman who from the very start was covered and guided by the Holy Spirit, a woman of faith who believed that God’s promises to her will come to pass. May we, too, become more docile, more submissive, and more obedient to the Divine Will. Fiat voluntas tua! Thy will be done Lord!
—————-
Allow me to share this text message I received recently: “We heal our souls whenever we confess; we heal our spirit whenever we pray; we heal our body whenever we fast and abstain; and we heal our heart whenever we forgive.” May the Holy Spirit heal us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. May He heal us of our bad habits, and our broken relationships, and may the Holy Spirit heal our homes, our country, our world, our earth.
—————-
Let me end with the words of a physician who said that in his 30 years of medical practice, he has prescribed many things, but he has come to realize that the best medicine is love. When asked, what if it doesn’t work, his reply was: “Double the dose.” May we who are in the business of loving continue to love, and keep on loving and doubling the dose, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
—————-
Happy Mother’s Day! As we pray for our mothers and for all mothers, we also pray for our motherland, our mother earth, and our mother nature.
—————-
A moment with the Lord:
Lord, may we become comforters to each other. Amen.

MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

Give us good leaders, Lord!

The story is told about a Japanese on board a cruise ship who, after using his mobile phone, threw it into the sea. When asked why, he said: “Oh, we have plenty of those in Japan.” Likewise, an American threw his laptop into the sea after using it, and said: “We have plenty of those in America.” Just then a Filipino pushed a Filipino politician overboard. When asked why, his response was: “Oh, we have plenty of those in the Philippines.”
—————-
In today’s Gospel (John 10:1-10), Jesus notes the difference between good and hired shepherds. The former are for the service; the latter are for the money. Likewise, we note the difference between statesmen and politicians. The former work for the good of the nation, while the latter work for the next elections. The former are few, the latter are aplenty.
—————-
There is only one Good Shepherd—Jesus Christ our Lord. The rest of us who claim to be shepherds are in reality not so good. Most of us are “not-so-good” or “trying-to-be-good” shepherds who keep on trying to be good anyway. In humility. We ask the Good Shepherd to help us not only to talk good but to be truly good.
—————-
To be a good shepherd, i.e. religious or civic leader, one must have gone through or must continue to undergo conversion or metanoia. A leader who has no vision and who has no sense of mission is what Jesus calls today a hireling, a thief, and a robber, who has no concern for the sheep. Such a shepherd leaves the sheep and runs away, and abandons the sheep.

—————-
Another mark of a good shepherd is the presence of the spirit of service or diakonia in his/her life. And so it is that we have shepherds who enjoy the perks and privileges of their office, but so wanting when it comes to the service that goes along with their office. They lead only by words, but they do not really go out of their way to serve.
—————-
One other mark of a good shepherd is communion or koinonia. A leader must be present to his/her flock. He/she must listen and must be in touch with the needs, aspirations, hopes, and dreams of those he/she leads. To be just that, a leader must have deep communion with God, for he/she who truly listens to God will truly love his/her flock. A shepherd who does not pray, will go astray.
—————-
One final mark of a good shepherd is that of proclamation or kerygma. Neither fear nor favor should stop him/her from proclaiming Gospel values. A leader is a prophet and must not be focused on personal profit. A leader must by his/her very life and person, more than by his/her words, be a constant source of strength and inspiration to the flock. If we do not inspire, why don’t we just retire? If we can no longer lead, why don’t we indeed just leave?
—————-
Here is one text message I received which I think is a beautiful reminder for shepherds: “To be tender with the young; to be compassionate with the aged; to be sympathetic with the striving; to be patient with the weak; and to be forgiving of sinners … for in our lifetime, we were, and will be any of all of these.”
—————-
Today is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Let us pray that God will send more men and women to work in His vineyard. Yes, the harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few. Men and women who are interested in the priestly and religious life, the Lord is calling you, and the world is waiting for you.
—————-
All of us are called! All of us are called to be good. All of us are called for a mission. All of us are called to God’s heart, and all of us are called to go home to heaven at the end of our earthly sojourn. Stop being cold, because you are called!
—————-
Allow me to share with you my ordination prayer, which I made some 46 years ago: “You have called me, Oh Lord, not so much because of me, but in spite of me; not so much to become a somebody but to be a someone to you and to your people; keep me, Oh Lord, ever in your love. Amen.”
—————-
Question: Why SHEpherd, and not HEpherd? Is it because women are better than men leaders? Just asking…
—————-
Moment with the Lord:
Lord, remind us that we cannot truly lead others, if we are not led by You. Amen.

MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

God’s generosity and mercy

An Easter surprise moment happened to me when I had a counseling with a 93-year-old widow last month. She said she dreamed that her deceased husband had a child out of wedlock, and this bothered her. I thought she would pour out her hurts and anger. To my surprise, she told me that she would like to find this child and somehow give also some help or inheritance from his husband. What a generous and merciful woman!
—————-
Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. More and more, I realize that beyond divine justice and divine love, there is divine mercy. Justice is getting what we deserve. Love is getting what we don’t deserve. Mercy is getting something, whether deserved or not. In all our dealings, may we constantly go beyond justice, and beyond love and move on to mercy, and there, find God. May our constant earnest prayer be “Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner!”
—————-
In today’s Gospel (John 20:19-31), we hear of the disciples getting stronger in their belief in the Resurrection. Their doubts and fears gradually gave way to commitment and courage. Whatever turbulence they were going through as individuals and as a group was calmed down by Christ’s assuring words: “Peace be with you.” Are you going through any problem, difficulty, fear or trial right now? Let Christ tell you again, “Peace be with you.”
—————-
As it were, the Lord does not want us to wallow and stagnate in our personal miseries and misfortunes. The antidote to stagnation is mission. We have to see the “big picture” and not be caught up with our little screens. “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Remember, wherever you are, you are there, and God is there! In everything, in anything that happens in our lives, there is a reason, and there is a mission. Instead of stagnating on the question “Why,” move on with the question “Where.” It is mission that leads us out of our miseries and prisons.
—————-
Allow me to share an “Easter Sunday moment” with you. After a long, hard week, I treated myself with a big bowl of hot chicken mami. Talk of comfort food! When it was time to pay, I found out that I had no money in my wallet. What to do? Leave my watch in the restaurant while I went to get money, or make a promissory note? Just then, the waiter walked up to me and said: “Sir, the family over there had already paid for you.” I walked up to Jo and Mike and their son Miguel, and told them of my predicament, and praised the Risen Lord with them for making Himself so real to me that Easter day; and for the family too, especially for Jo whom I was able to bless before she checked into a hospital that afternoon for her myoma surgery the next day. Yes, our God is risen. He is alive. He is with us, and He is a God of surprises!
—————-
“Jesus, I trust in you.” May we learn early enough that our achievements and plans come to nothing without God’s grace and approval. It is consoling, too, that our sins and mistakes are small compared to His unconditional mercy and love. Yes, the sooner we realize, and the sooner we live in God’s mercy, the better for all of us. Are you still living and pursuing your personal glory, or have you already surrendered to God’s will and mercy?
—————-
We will have a peaceful and meaningful life if we hold on to the Divine Will (“Lord, thy will be done!”); and if we trust in the Divine Mercy (“Jesus, I trust in You!”) God is good, loving, generous, and merciful. Amen!
—————-
I have said it before, and I say it again, that it is better to be presumptuous of God’s love than to doubt God’s love. God’s love is greater than we can ever imagine. I also hold on to the promise of the Divine Mercy so that our sins are but like a drop of water in the ocean of God’s mercy! We owe God everything; He owes us nothing; we are His unworthy, but very loved servants. Thank you, Lord, for your tremendous and fascinating love! Amen!
—————-
May God be merciful on our world, our one and only world so broken by wars and violence, this world He loved so much that He sent His Only Begotten Son. Yes, may the Lord be merciful upon us all. Through it all, may we never lose hope, nor be dismayed by trials, but rather, be filled with confidence of God’s unconditional love.
—————-
A moment with the Lord:
Lord, help us to be more generous and merciful like You. Amen.
