On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. (Hebrews 1:1-2)
It is important for us as Christians to remember that the teachings of Christ, even through his Apostles is the only pathway to God in this present time. It is also just as important that we build our faith and confidence in God's word and not men. Men die, we change, we go astray and even err from the truth, but the Word will always remain the same. If Jesus or his Apostles didn't teach what we're teaching, we're not building on God's truth.
This is the situation that the Jews found themselves in when Christ appeared. John the Baptist who was his forerunner had been preaching to them to repent of their sins and the err of their ways because the kingdom of heaven was at hand. Even the Scribes and Pharisees had come to where he was baptizing and he said to them; You generation of snakes, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Once Jesus was baptized, John made it no secret that his ministry was done and Christ ministry had begun. God even confirmed it when he spoke to some of the Apostles in (Luke 9:35), saying; "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."
The Apostle Paul also made it clear in his teaching as it pertained to the law of Moses in (Galations 3:24-25), saying; The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian.
So in this lesson the writer is reminding us of the will of God, even for this present time for those who may seek after him. It doesn't matter what prophet said it or how great he was, his time has past. Christ said in (John 14:6); "I am the way and the truth and the life. No man can come to the Father except through me. And he gave his Apostles instructions on what he wanted us to know and commanded them in (Matthew 28:19-20), on what to do with his instructions.
