The Kawatiri River House is situated on the Westport wharf which was once a thriving port shipping coal all over the world. The Kawatiri River house was built in 1910 as the office and store room for the Union Steamship Company of Dunedin. It has been lovingly restored and now operates as studio apartment accommodation. It is a few minutes walk from the main street of Westport.
Westport is central to many attractions in the Buller District. There are many walking tracks to explore along with world class cycleways. The Old Ghost Road has become a number one attraction for mountain bikers. Crossing the mountains between the Lyell and Mohikanui it is a challenging and spectacular ride. The Denniston Plateau offers many walks and for those that love history and there is a story to be told in the old workings of the Denniston mine and the brave souls who chose to live on the plateau in the 1800’s.
Cape Foulwind a short drive from Westport has the Star Tavern and a scenic cliff top walk to the seal colony and Tauranga Bay. Twenty minutes down the road Mitchell’s Gully Goldmine offers a glimpse into the past with a walk around an old gold mine. Charleston, just up the road, has many lovely walks and is home to Under World rafting Company which takes visitors on the adventure of a life time.
Punakaiki and the Pancake Rocks is a 40 minute drive South on one of the most scenic coastal highways in the world.
