As we reach the one-year mark since we took over Counter Culture, it's with a heavy heart that we share the difficult news that we will be closing our doors on Saturday 12th April.
The past year has been a rollercoaster, full of highs and lows. We took on this journey because we truly love board games and deeply believe in the power of community. From day one, this place has been everything we hoped for - welcoming, joyful, and full of connection. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of it and share it with all of you.
Unfortunately, due to the changing economic landscape, we find ourselves at a point where we can no longer keep Counter Culture running. There are many factors contributing to this and it has become clear that despite our best efforts, we no longer have a viable path forward.
We know this will come as a disappointment to many, and we want you to know that this decision was not made lightly. We truly love this place, and it pains us deeply to have to close.
We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible staff - past and present - who have helped us navigate this year of transition. Sam, Alex, Chalene, Sophie, Lucy, Zavier, Ellie, Conil, Remi, Ezra, Ar-Em, Caila, Ocean, Mike, Catelin, and Matthew: we are beyond grateful for your dedication, your trust, and your unwavering hard-work through changing times. You’ve made Counter Culture what it is, and we know our customers appreciate everything you’ve done.
Counter Culture is not the only business that has been struggling in Wellington, we know the struggle is real for everyone - for suppliers, for bars, for cafes, for shops, and for you. If you can, support the ones that are still fighting the good fight.
While our time is limited, we’re still open for another month. Please come by, share your favourite games, and let us celebrate the community that has made Counter Culture so special.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of this journey with us.
With love,
Jono & Jade
