Away from the maddening crowds, a little corner of North Canterbury has the recipe for well being. Mt Lyford Alpine Village offers the right balance of rest, relaxation and inspiration. Located about 600 meters above sea level, the village is shrouded by Mankuka, Kanuka and Beech forest. Around 50 log cabins are dotted around on the mountainside, some obvious, others hidden. Protective covenants ensure that all new houses are log built with alpine features, ensuring the village will never lose it’s unique identity. Many of the homes are available for holiday lettings.
Sit back and soak up the quiet, occasionally broken by the calls of the native birds that inhabit the area. There is a healthy population of Bellbirds, Fantail and Wax eye on the mountain, as well as a few introduced species like Quail. An active trapping program is reducing predators and helping bird life flourish.
The mountain has several walks which range from easy to advanced. Some are dominated by vast swathes of Manuka forest, others pierce pristine Mountain and Black Beech. Check before hand about access, as some of the walks cross private land. The mountain is home to many beehives, due to the abundance of Manuka and Kanuka, with December and January offering a spectacular show of blossom.
Mt Lyford Lodge serves as a boutique accommodation provider, bar and restaurant. For those not wanting the hassle of cooking, a quick trip down to the lodge is most rewarding. The menus change regularly and there is a focus on hand crafted, made from scratch dining, wherever possible using locally sourced ingredients. The lodge often hosts weddings over the summer season and is becoming increasingly popular with those looking for something unique. The Lodge is the hub of village life, with Friday nights being popular for locals to get together for a catch up.
