Built in 1906 as the Nelson Rowing Club, The Boathouse is today run as a club and is open to the public as a lunch cafe (Wed, Thurs, Fri), Friday evening live music venue, Function venue & Community hall. Nelson's finest waterfront view, delicious affordable food, locally sourced Tap beers and bottled wine - all with our stunning view of the harbour and mountain backdrop.

Friday nights are back by the water 🌊

Tonight’s menu is looking pretty good, the views aren’t bad either, and we’ve got local favourite Rod O-Live providing the soundtrack from 6–9pm as part of our Legendary Locals series.

Whether you’re in the mood for a slow dinner, a glass of wine, or simply an excuse not to cook, we’ve got you covered.

Friday — Legendary Locals: Rod O-Live
A familiar face around The Boathouse, Rod brings an evening of classics, crowd favourites, and a few surprises along the way. The perfect soundtrack to a Friday dinner by the water.

Saturday — Layna and The Leftovers
Blending rock, jazz, blues, funk, alternative influences and soulful harmonies, Layna and The Leftovers have a sound all of their own. Expect a mix of originals and covers from a band that refuses to be boxed into one genre.

Last week at The Boathouse 🌊✨

We started the week with Polynesian Odyssey, as award-winning storyteller Jace Hobbs took us on a journey across the Pacific, sharing the extraordinary story of Polynesian navigation, exploration and endurance ⛵

On Wednesday, Milonga Tango Night brought an evening of tango, music and movement, welcoming dancers and those simply there to soak up the atmosphere. 💃

Then on Friday, the Back of Beyond Duo took the stage for another fantastic Legendary Locals night, filling the room with their unique blend of folk, Celtic and Cuban 🎶

Legendary Locals returns 🎶

On June 5th, join us for another easy Friday evening by the water.

The Back of Beyond Duo, featuring Craig Denham and Nathan Torvik, delivers a vibrant, genre-blending musical journey that feels like a warm, sunlit ramble through wild and wonderful landscapes.

With Craig’s expressive accordion, piano keys, whistles, foot percussion, and soulful vocals anchoring the sound, alongside Nathan’s versatile multi-instrumentalism on guitar, bass, mandolin (and whatever else strikes the moment), their music weaves together funky folk grooves, Celtic spirit, Cuban rhythms, classical elegance, and heartfelt originals with well-loved covers.

Part of our Legendary Locals series, celebrating the talented musicians who help make Nelson such a vibrant place to live.

The Boathouse Week was something pretty special 🌊✨

Thursday night was the official 40th Anniversary celebration for The Boathouse Society. It brought together precious members, artists, supporters, local businesses and the wider community to celebrate the stories and people that have shaped this place over the past four decades 💙

The evening featured historical displays, the pre-launch of the upcoming Boathouse history book project, and speeches reflecting on the courage and energy of a young group of owners who wanted to do things differently and helped build (and rebuild!) The Boathouse into what it is today. Nelson Mayor Hon Dr Nick Smith also shared some words, which you’ll hear throughout this reel.

The rest of the week was packed too, with the Guardians of Hope conservation film, Swing Night dance lessons, Legendary Locals with Craig Prichard & Friends, and Sinatra & Friends with the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band🎷

What if we told you one of the greatest exploration stories in human history happened right here in the Pacific? 🌊

Long before compasses, GPS, or modern maps, Polynesian navigators crossed the vast and unforgiving Pacific Ocean, discovering and settling islands scattered across thousands of kilometres of open sea.

Tomorrow, Tuesday June 2, award-winning storyteller and former educator for the Hawaiian Nation, Jace Hobbs, joins us for an evening of stories, images, legends, and discoveries that bring this extraordinary chapter of human history to life.

This is not an academic lecture. It's an invitation to step into the mindset of the explorers themselves — to imagine the courage, knowledge, and determination it took to venture into the unknown and change the Pacific forever.

The Nelson Jazz Club Big Band is bringing a massive 20-piece lineup to The Boathouse with Sinatra & Friends for one final celebration of 40 years of The Boathouse Society and the community that has been shaped by the water 💙
