🎨 100 years of kindergarten, Celebrated through Art!

To celebrate the centenary of kindergarten in New Zealand, New Zealand Kindergartens invited kindergartens around the country to create artwork reflecting what kindergarten means to their communities.

Four of our kindergartens took part, with our winning artwork from Waimea Kindergarten now residing at Government House in Wellington!❤️

Take a closer look at all four artworks and the stories behind them.

🐑🌿 Meet Peanut & Coconut! 🌿🐑

We have some very exciting news from Waimārama — our kindergarten whānau is getting two very special new members!

Please welcome Peanut and Coconut, our gorgeous new lambs. 🥰 They will soon be coming to live on Prickle Mountain, right beside kindergarten, but for now they are staying up at John and Jude’s house while they grow a little bigger and get to know us.

Most days, we have been making the hīkoi up to visit them, taking turns giving them their bottle of milk and spending time gently talking to, patting and caring for them. It has been lovely watching the tamariki learn how to approach them calmly, be gentle, notice their needs and build trust. There has been plenty of excitement too — those little tails certainly know when the milk is coming! 😂

Our lambs are also giving us a wonderful opportunity to revisit what it means to be kaitiaki. Through caring for Peanut and Coconut, our tamariki are developing an understanding that being a kaitiaki means looking after the creatures and environments around us with manaakitanga, aroha and respect.

Our resident sheep, Cupcake and Fluffy, have been a much-loved part of our kindergarten whānau and have taught us so much along the way. They will soon be moving on to greener pastures and a new chapter, and we are very grateful for all the wonderful memories and learning they have given us. 💚

We can't wait for Peanut and Coconut to make their big move down to Prickle Mountain and become part of everyday kindergarten life.

There is already plenty of excitement about our newest friends — and we have a feeling there will be lots more learning, caring and ako to come! 🐑🌱

Nau mai, Peanut rāua ko Coconut!
Welcome to the Waimārama whānau! ❤️
