Some Interesting Statistics

Hi All,

Here are a few statistics and observations regarding activity at the Gunhouse since its official opening in October 2023.

It is fair to say that the Gunhouse has evolved into something much bigger than I ever anticipated. From humble beginnings as a small private bar, it has grown into a social hub in the Maratoto Valley, attracting local, national, and international interest.

Since opening, we have welcomed more than 350 visitors, including guests from the USA, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Argentina, Israel, Tonga, Nepal, England, Australia, China, the Philippines, and throughout New Zealand. We have also had the pleasure of hosting many former Navy personnel who have taken the time to call in for a cuppa or a cold one. It is always great to catch up and share stories.

Events held at the Gunhouse have included ANZAC Day services, braziers, music nights, hāngī, birthday celebrations, bonfires, BBQs, rugby and movie nights on the big screen, mid-winter swims, and Maratoto Valley mancave crawls. In addition, the countless spontaneous and unplanned gatherings have been some of the most enjoyable moments of all.

To the many people who have gifted, donated, or entrusted memorabilia to us for safekeeping—thank you. We now have an estimated 200-plus exhibits on display, with many more still to be showcased. Further additions are already on the way, and every contribution is greatly appreciated. Together, they have created an outstanding collection that I expect will continue to grow for many years to come.

Looking Ahead

There is still much to be done to ensure the long-term future and sustainability of the Gunhouse.

Our vision is for the Gunhouse to remain a welcoming and safe place for both serving and former Navy personnel to gather, connect, reconnect, and reminisce about their time in service. It is always a highlight when we hear that an old shipmate is coming to visit.

For those looking to spend some time in one of New Zealand’s most stunning valleys, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, the invitation is always open. Come and unwind among like-minded people. There is space available for self-contained caravans and campers on the property.

Current and Future Projects

Extension of the Gunhouse to create additional display space.
Development of a games area featuring pool, darts, and table tennis.
Establishment of a lounge bar above the existing main bar.
Construction of additional accommodation for visitors.
Upgrades to communal facilities, including bathrooms and heads.

This work is truly a labour of love, and progress continues steadily. The potential for the Gunhouse to become something genuinely unique is significant, and we sincerely thank everyone for their continued interest, support, and contributions.

Fair winds and Following Seas…happiness is a hot gun.

ANZAC Day 2026 — Hot Wash Up

Now that the dust has well and truly settled from ANZAC Day, I’d like to offer my thanks and share some observations.

As this was the inaugural commemoration held at the Gunhouse, there was some trepidation about how the weekend would unfold. Suffice to say it was an outstanding success. We received many positive comments from ex-serving personnel and locals from Maratoto.

Friday:

Early arrivals made for a most enjoyable PAC in the Gunhouse — old mates catching up and locals in attendance. We made a good call to turn in around 2230 to be ready for the dawn.

ANZAC Day (Dawn):

Dawn was crisp, cold and clear — perfect weather for the event. The service began with ex- and serving personnel falling in and marching onto the parade area. Surrounded by locals and the constant chatter of magpies, the setting felt right. A brazier provided warmth and ambience.

The program:

Welcome speeches

A well-researched, relevant oration by Guest Speaker Commodore John Campbell MNZM RNZN Rtd

Wreath-laying in honour of those serving and who have served

The Trench Whistle signalled the Acts of Remembrance

The Last Post reverberated down the valley; the NZ flag was lowered to half-mast

The Ode, one minute’s silence, then Reveille

National Anthems of New Zealand and Australia

Attendees were invited to lay a poppy as a personal tribute while “Brothers in Arms” played

It was a great, relevant and personal service to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Attendance and logistics:

Many people travelled long distances to be with us (notably from Australia, Christchurch, Turangi and Wellington) — thank you.

Despite some late cancellations and a few no-shows, I estimate we had roughly 50 people for the dawn service and breakfast, with people coming and going through the day, and a similar number for the hangi that evening.

Next year:

Will we do this again? Yes. The consensus on the day was that this should be an annual event, so we will make it so. We’ve set a high bar; with a few minor tweaks the event will be even better next year.

Thank you again to everyone who attended and contributed — it was your day, and your presence made it special.

Watch this space.
