Another successful Friends of Outlook reserve!

Saturday morning’s team learnt all about the pest plants wild ginger and arum lily, and how to properly dispose of them! Plus we managed to fit in a few more carex along the stream side as well as some native trees on the bank 🌱

A job well done!

Curious about conservation but not sure where to start? Save the Date!
Come and have a chat with us at a relaxed Caring for Nature “drop‑in” session for anyone who’s new (or not so new) to volunteering, conservation, or nature mahi.
Come along, have a chat, and find out what we do in Greenhithe, and across the Upper Waitemata area. You can learn about simple actions you can take at home to help our environment 🌱💚

This month’s pest plant is Taiwan Cherry 🌸

🔍 Why is it so bad? While it might look pretty, it’s a fast growing canopy invader, leaving no room or sun for our beautiful native plants!

Birds spread its seeds everywhere, so if you’ve noticed cherry seedlings popping up at home, please remove them! You can also replace mature trees with our natives like kōwhai, karamū, or pōhutakawa 💚

Two of our awesome student trapline guardians out protecting Wainoni Park ✨🌱 (plus the cheeky pīwakawaka following them around 🤭)

Over the past 5 months they’ve managed to catch 1 possum, 1 hedgehog, 7 rats, and 3 mice! Great work team 💪🏻

The Friends of Outlook Reserve team on Saturday got a hands on experience with Jasmine, our pest plant of the month! It had taken over a kawakawa bush, but thankfully its now cleared up 🌱💪🏻

We also managed to stake our new plantings, and cut down some smaller privet and monkey apple trees to clear up space!

Pest Plant of the Month: Jasmine 🌼

🔎 Did you know that while jasmine might smell amazing, if it gets into our native bush it can smother young trees and stop native plants from growing!

If you’ve got jasmine at home, make sure you keep it contained and controlled to help protect our local ngahere 🌱

For more information, check out jasmine on the Auckland Council website.

Saturday’s planting session down at William Gamble Reserve with an awesome bunch of Rangitoto Students! It was some very muddy work but managed to get lots of natives planted as well as some arum lily removal 💪🏻🍃 great mahi everyone!!

14/07/2026

Over the past two Tuesdays, we’ve had an amazing group of Rangitoto College students down in Wainoni Park helping clear out the buttercup that’s taken over last year’s planting!

Huge thank you to all the students who came along and got stuck in, your mahi is truly appreciated! 💚🍃
