Game on as Covid-delayed play finally kicks off!

The once successful Maungakaka Rugby Club has fallen on hard times in Feilding Little Theatre Players’ production of Penalties Pints and Pirouettes.

A play six years on the sidelines is finally set to find an audience at Feilding Little Theatre.

The cast and crew of Penalties Pints and Pirouettes were primed for opening night when they completed their final rehearsal on March 26, 2020.

Alas, the comedy centred on a grassroots rugby club never made it onto the field, stymied by the Covid-19 pandemic and its nationwide lockdown.

The trials and tribulations of the Maungakaka Rugby Club will finally be shared at the theatre this month, albeit with a new team. Aaron McLeod is the sole member of the original cast returning for the new production – and he’s playing a different role.

Director Joan Ford said McLeod would play Tony, the club president faced with a difficult decision; amalgamate with bitter rivals Hillcrest or risk their own extinction.

The comedy, written by Neil Troost, used the fictional small-town setting of Maungakaka to convey how the perspective of outsiders could expand our outlook, Ford said, and the rewards of embracing change.

It was a very physical comedy, she said, with laugh-out-loud moments and language not suitable for young ears.

“It pushes boundaries as good comedy theatre should.”

Penalties Pints and Pirouettes’ seven-night run at Feilding Little Theatre begins on July 17, with the final show on August 1. Tickets are $35, with a dinner/show combo available for $65. It is not suitable for young children.

This comedy follows a group of rugby players as they grapple with unexpected changes in their lives. Despite their fierce reluctance at the start, they soon discover that community strength and spirit can appear in the most surprising places.
Mangaukaka — a small fictional rural town — was once home to a proud and successful rugby club. Now, their arch‑rivals Hillcrest have approached them with a proposal to amalgamate. Change is never easy. It’s bad enough they didn’t win a single game all season, and now their beloved “team away trip” is under threat because the wives insist they’re needed to help with a school fundraiser. Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
So what will they do? They’ll have to step up, broaden their horizons, make new friends, and rediscover what community spirit really means. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
Besides — plenty of top rugby players have taken up dancing.
How hard can it be?
