PRIZEGIVING 7pm & Spot Prizes After the 1994 Whitbread Round The World Race stopover in Auckland, the then new Viaduct Harbour development was starting to become quiet with several businesses closing down. The Loaded Hog did not want to become the “Loaded Hog of the Ghos
t Town” and one of their initiatives was to approach well known triathlon event director Phil Briars for some event ideas to keep interest and activity in the Viaduct precinct. Phil came up with a genius idea to hold a 5km fun run, which became known as the Loaded Hog 5km Fun Run Series which kicked off in July 1994. After 15 years under Loaded Hog titlelage and with the closing of the Loaded Hog, a new home had to be found at the Viaduct. O’Hagans Irish Bar opened their doors and arms to host the event and this has been the home for the O’Hagans 5km Fun Run for the last 13 years. We moved to The Fox London Bar in 2022, renaming the run THE 5KM FOX TROT!!! Late 2023 saw us change venues within the GSH Group and now we are based out of THE CELLAR BAR (under Danny Doolans). However we LOVE The Fox Trot name so much... we're taking it with us!! :)
Record times are currently held by then British representative Tom Mayo 13 mins 51 secs and by NZ Olympian Kimberley Smith 14:59, however the run is aimed at all levels from the beginner to the elite. Whilst the course has had several disruptions due the development of the America’s Cup Village and the Wynyard Quarter it has remained pretty much as first designed – a measured out-back 5km run on relatively traffic free roads. Entry fee started off at $5 and included a free drink at the finish and opportunity to win one in ten spot prizes as well as a $100 bar tab each night. In a failed attempt to keep up with inflation the entry fee is now $12, still with all the above benefits. Whilst it is a fun run everyone wants to know their time and check out their improvement/progress so every run is timed and recorded with results emailed to participants and available on Webscorer. The highest number of runners is 197 with the current average number being around 85-100. Each night turns out to be quite social with participants staying on after the prizegiving to enjoy The Fox hospitality – fine food and refreshments.
