Eight O Eight by Monagon officially released by Roland. More than just a children’s book

Despite being aimed at children, the book explores surprisingly serious rhythmic concepts, including beats, bars, syncopation, polyrhythms and odd time signatures, all taught through voice, handclaps and play.

The paper TR-808

The book includes a unique paper TR-808 with 16 movable sliders. By combining the different sounds, you can create your own rhythm patterns. It’s essentially a physical, paper-based representation of a sequencer.

The artwork

The artwork is by A. Qadim Haqq, a major figure in Detroit techno’s visual culture. His work is closely connected to influential labels and artists including Transmat and Underground Resistance.

That makes this book a fascinating intersection of Japanese music culture, the Roland TR-808 and Detroit techno—far more than an ordinary children’s book.
