Cascade Cymbidium

The botanic ancestors of the Cascade Cymbidium that we now cultivate originally grew on dead trees and rock faces in various regions of Taiwan, Vietnam and China at an elevation of 1500 to 2200 m. As such, the plants had no need to develop any flowers that emerged above the plants, and the flowers ended up hanging downwards. This gave us a fantastic opportunity to grow Cymbidiu

m plants which can be beautifully presented in a high vase or a hanging pot. Care tips

After carefully removing the plant from the packaging by cutting open the plastic container, it's best to submerge the plant for a few minutes in water that is not too cold in order to ensure that the ball of earth and roots becomes quite wet again. In contrast to most other orchids, the Cymbidium needs to be given enough water and should be treated similarly to other green potted plants in terms of watering. It's advisable to ensure that the ball of earth and roots is a bit moist, although the roots should not be left standing in surplus water. Location

Place the Cymbidium in a spot in the room or sun lounge where it will receive lots of light. During the dark winter months in particular, the plant will need all the light there is. In the springtime and summer, be careful to ensure that the leaves do not get burned due to excessive direct sunlight. Although the temperature in the living room will often be higher, that should not be a problem. Fertilisation

In winter, the Cymbidium needs very little fertilizer. In springtime, after the plant has flowered and new shoots are appearing, you can add fertilizer at regular intervals, using a fertilizer containing sufficient nitrogen (N). In the autumnl, you should reduce the frequency of fertilizer additions. Re-potting

When the plant is practically bursting out of its pot, the time has come to re-pot it. Use a high pot for that purpose, as the roots of the Cascade Cymbidium will develop best in such a pot. Use a soil mixture that is well aerated and not too dense but which can also retain sufficient moisture for the Cymbidium.
