What makes a body ‘whole’, and who gets to decide?

On 08 October, during Accessibility Week, BIRD welcomes Julia van Reek for a personal and thought-provoking talk about ableism, autonomy and her own experience with amputation.

As a cultural anthropology graduate, Julia combines her personal story with her research into ableism: the often invisible norms and prejudices surrounding people with disabilities. She’ll share the doubts and considerations that led to her decision to have her leg amputated at a young age, and the freedom that decision ultimately brought her.

An inspiring evening that challenges us to rethink how we look at bodies, disability and autonomy.

As we’re getting closer to our One Love celebration, every week we’re taking a look back at 15 years of BIRD. 💙

A lot has changed since 2011, but BIRD has always been about more than four walls. It’s a place to come together. To eat, meet, listen, dance and discover.

24 September is BIRD’s Alternate Take Festival.

For Alternate Takes, BIRD brings together some of Rotterdam’s most exciting talent development platforms to introduce the next generation of artists.

As part of One Love, our 15 year anniversary celebration from 18 September to 1 October, BIRD opens its stage to emerging talent from across the city. Together with .of.knowledge , .north and , we’ve curated a line-up that reflects the diversity, creativity and musical spirit of Rotterdam’s next generation.

Representing Cult North is the angelic , bringing mellow vibes and a tender live sound with her band at 20:00.

From House of Knowledge, brings alternative R&B to the stage, performing in two languages at 21:30.

De Nieuwe Lichting presents two acts. First up is , exploring an everchanging soundscape where the absurd meets the unexpected, at 22:15.

At 23:00, .electronix takes over with a rhythmic blend of African percussion and electronic experimentation.

And then there’s BIRD.

Through our own talent development and programming, BIRD has always been about creating space for artists to experiment, connect and grow. For Alternate Takes, we put that into practice with two artists from our own musical universe.

The Nest brings together , , and in an eclectic, jazz infused ensemble that moves freely across styles. Catch them at 20:45.

And when the club calls, BIRD’s very own takes over the decks. From timeless classics to the latest and greatest, expect a dancefloor journey from 20:45 until 23:00.

Alternate Takes is BIRD doing what we do best: curating talent, connecting people and creating space for new music and meaningful moments.

Meet the people behind BIRD: Nina Hooimeijer & Gaby van Kesteren.

For 15 years, they’ve been partners in crime, partners in life, and two of the people who have build BIRD from the ground up.

Not just the space itself, but the restaurant, the team, the day to day operations and, most importantly, the place where music, people and unforgettable moments come together.

So, what’s it like to build and grow BIRD over 15 years?
