ProgFrog is going to quit in December
May 1, 2024
What has now become a household name in the Netherlands of the best known and smallest prog rock stage is entering its final period. Where in the world can you watch good performances in small venue and get something tasty to snack on from the house in the meantime? But the small-scale performance of progressive rock at Youth Center 't Blok on Sunday afternoons is going to stop.
Recently, initiator Marcel Mertens decided to stop organizing the series of concerts with international artists. Mertens, himself a lover of the music genre, started ProgFrog together with Piet Korbee. In recent years, bands, mostly foreign, stopped by in Nieuwerkerk.
Prior to last Sunday's performance by Marillion cover band Mr. Punch, Mertens announced to the audience, there will be no from his side no new season in youth center 't Blok in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. There are still 6 concerts planned and then it's done.
Already earlier he announced to the sponsors that as of December 1 there will be no continuation after 14 years of progressive or symphonic rock. Lack of interest is not a cause, also last Sunday the gig was sold out. But there is no follow-up from the youth and the years are going to count for the men who organize it.
And so ends a great series of performances. ProgFrog was able to be there thanks to sponsors because it operated on a non-profit basis, it received no subsidy from the Zuidplas municipality. Tickets for the final performances (see list below) are available at https://www.progfrog.nl/
