In May, we'll have some familiar faces down underground. Martí Mitjavila brings a killer rhythm section to play his favourite standards. He's one of the most virtuous players we know, so be sure to come and check him out!

Martí Mitjavila is an Amsterdam based bass clarinetist who grew up near Barcelona.
Known for his lyrical playing and warm sound, he has crafted a style rooted in the traditions of swing music and hardbop. Martí's goal is to shine light on an underrepresented instrument in jazz, the bass clarinet, and to claim its validity as a vehicle of expression.

On this occasion, Martí's quartet will play selections from the Great American Songbook (Gershwin, Cole Porter) and compositions from the hard bop era.
The band will feature some of the best jazz musicians from the Amsterdam scene, such as guitar wizard Linus Eppinger, double bass sorcerer Ties Laarakker, and drum druid Tijn Koenen.

Martí's achievements include winning the Best Soloist Award at the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award in 2022, the Grachtenfestival Jazz Competition in 2022, and the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours in 2019 with his trio. He has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam and the Bimhuis Rough Diamonds Series, among others.

Another month of jazz, and we got some fresh faces in our cellar. Up and coming pianist Freddie Fleischman brings a load of friends, which is going to be great. He also recently started his agency for managing jazz artists, so you'll hear more from him in the future to be sure! See you there!

This project is all about feel, groove, and soul. Freddie & Friends is a collaboration between three Amsterdam-based students who all agree on one thing above all: music has to feel right. Their sound is warm, energetic, and rhythmically strong, with influences from gospel, jazz, funk, R&B, and soul. It is all about connecting with the audience, creating a live experience that invites, moves, and flows with the moment. Enjoy!

New session, familiar faces! We are happy to have Underground legends Martín and Jonas back, in a completely new collaboration where they play the music of some artists that are legends to them and to the jazz community. We cannot wait!

Saxophonist Martín Díaz and trumpeter Jonas Belleman come together in a high-energy tribute to two of the architects of bebop: Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. United by a deep respect for the tradition and an uncompromising love for the language of bebop, this project celebrates the urgency, virtuosity, and lyricism that defined a revolution in jazz.

Catalan saxophonist and composer Martín Díaz, based in Amsterdam, is widely recognized as one of the leading voices of his generation. Leader of the Martin Díaz Quintet—winner of the DownBeat Award 2020 and the Leiden Jazz Award—he has recorded over ten albums and performed internationally. His debut album Identities was released by the renowned Fresh Sound Records, a label that launched the careers of major international artists. Díaz has been a member of the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra, the Jong Metropole Orchestra, and has collaborated with leading figures of the Dutch and international jazz scenes, including Dick Oatts, Jeremy Pelt, Jasper Blom, Ben van Gelder, and Philip Lassiter.

Deeply connected to the bebop tradition, Díaz also created the Parker For All video series during the pandemic, filmed in his Amsterdam home, celebrating Charlie Parker’s music with prominent Dutch jazz musicians.

Trumpeter Jonas Belleman, a young talent from Haarlem and a student at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam, brings a fresh yet deeply rooted approach to the music. With a strong devotion to bebop, his trumpet style is inspired by masters such as Fats Navarro and Kenny Dorham.

Together, Díaz and Belleman channel the spirit of Parker and Powell with intensity and respect, offering a performance that is both historically grounded and vibrantly alive—honoring the past while speaking firmly in the present.

Two concerts in a month! We can get used to this to be honest. The 023Jazz festival was a great success with so many happy faces and happy ears in our cellars with the Sam Nieuwenhuijs Quartet. We're beyond thrilled we can organise another concert this month!

This month, we witness the rise of one of the most exciting young (and local!!) talents we've ever had in our cellar. The trumpet player Jonas Belleman has been visiting the session since he was 15 and we've seen him and his music faculty grow over the years with remarkable speed. Now we are so happy to invite him for his first proper gig at Haarlem Jazz Underground. He's joined by Brazilian trumpet player Rodolfo Neves.

Jonas Belleman has been making the rounds in Haarlem, both alone and together with his twin brother Wout on guitar. His love for traditional jazz has given him a sound that far surpasses his young age of 18. In Brazilian trumpet player Rodolfo Neves, who has been living in The Netherlands for a while and has been playing with all the Dutch and international greats, he has found a friend and appreciator of the same styles of music. At the Haarlem Jazz Underground session, they will perform a tribute to pianist and arranger Lennie Tristano.

No Wolfhound Jazz without Laura, and guess what, she's been working on her first album under her own name. She'll present songs from the record together with her beautiful old school show tunes project during the opening of our festival.

AUGUST 15 22:30 WILLIAM BARRETT
Also no Wolfhound Jazz without William, and he's been performing with many acts like The Fried Seven and Kika Sprangers recently. At the Wolfhound Jazz fest he'll play 'shoe gazer groovy and high impro tsjaktsjak bim boem' (his words), so you have to check it out!

AUGUST 16 21:00 RON CHA TRIO
Ron Cha is a piano player from Assam, India, who just released the first single 'Barikha' of his upcoming trio record with Tijs Klaassen and Wouter Kühne. He'll present tunes from his new album on this night of the jazz festival.

AUGUST 16 22:30 PAULA BILÁ
Andalucian singer Paula Bilá just finished recording her new album, a combination of songs evoking the sounds from her childhood as well as more modern jazz. She will play an intimate set just with piano and vocals.

AUGUST 17 21:00 FLEUR PEEREBOOM & GABRIELE BRAZZO
This young duo is making a name for themselves separately, but they're combining powers to present an engaging combination of guitar and tenor saxophone. Expect dazzling soundscapes and intense soloing.

AUGUST 17 22:30 SOUL JAZZ SUMMIT
Soul Jazz Mania brings the funky sounds of the late 60’s and early 70’s to the Club Up. Expect a night of dancing to the soul jazz sound of Jimmy Smith, Grant Green & Stanley Turrentine. A beautiful to end to our festival!

Just like last year we take a well-deserved summer break. So do most of you and we don't want the beautiful music in our cellar to go unheard. But we also have incredible news!

This year marks the 8th year of the Wolfhound Jazz Festival, which will take place during the big festival 14-16 August, as it has been every year since its inception. We will announce the (AMAZING) line-up soon and we can't wait to see you there. Enjoy summer!

MEANDER TRIO

Meander Trio is a new group consisting of Siebren Smink on guitar, Ketija Ringa - Karahona on flute and Līva Dumpe on vocals. Meander is the flowing effect of a river, slowly changing shape over time. This quality can be perceived in the soft music of this trio.

FENNE

In her music, singer Fenne Scholte combines jazz and influences from folk, classical music and pop. Her great sources of inspiration are Joni Mitchell, Jacob Collier and Becca Stevens. Last year, she released her single 'last night i dreamt about you'.

Versatility, energy and musicality define this young Brazilian musician based in Amsterdam. He has shown a unique way to express himself through music, crossing over the Brazilian samba-jazz, Bossa Nova and Choro with Jazz.

JK3 is a relatively new guitar trio led by Jurriaan Kurpershoek. In his dynamic, narrative pieces, they look for freedom and spontaneity, and push each other to really make music together. No rehearsed solos or pre-programmed click tracks, but never knowing what to expect.

Traditionally, Laura Dooge visits our festival together with Gijs Idema and William Barrett, but this time they bring drummer Carlos Ayuso. They will perform a love-letter to classic show-tunes of way back when. It will be hard to sit still!

BOBBY & LUCY'S NIGHT OF DUETS

In the style of legendary duos such as Ella & Louis, the final evening of the festival will kick off with the most beautiful duets ever written. Dancing cheek to cheek accompanied by a band featuring the absolute peak of the Dutch jazz scene, singer Lucy van Dongen (Malu) and Haarlem's own singer Bob Wiebes will sing music to dance to...and more!

Known for her lyrical and soulful clarinet playing, Virginia has been described as a “powerful new voice in the Canadian scene” by Juno Award-winning bassist Mike Downes. As a highly in-demand bandleader, sidewoman, and composer, Virginia keeps a regular performance schedule across Canada, the United States, and Europe. Ronny DeCarlo got in touch with us a while ago and we're superhappy that we have found a date for him to play the Underground. He played last years' Transition festival in Utrecht, so of course our venue was the logical next step 🙃

Ronny deCarlo is the moniker of the Colombian/Dutch guitarist and composer Roenik Roa Espinosa, who strives for a new sound that fuses his idiosyncratic playing with the sounddesign of Hip Hop, EDM and music for films and videogames.

You can hear influences from Funk & Fusion, 00’s boom bap, Spaghettiwestern soundtracks and Bryson Tiller’s Trapsoul. Tight arrangements and cinematic melodies coincide as borders between genres dissolve into Fonque: music for the body and the soul.

In 2023 Ronny deCarlo won ‘The Records’, a competition by the Keep an Eye Foundation that enabled Ronny to record his debut album ‘Fonque Nouveau’ and promote it on a 2024 tour through Dutch jazz venues and festivals.
