What happens when publishing is not just about making books, but about building a whole ecosystem around them?

For Eelco van Welie, publishing is a form of infrastructure. As director and publisher of nai010 uitgevers (nai010 publishers), he has led a Rotterdam-based house that has produced over 2,200 titles across architecture, art, photography, and design; books that circulate across Europe, America, Asia, and Australia.

Since 2005, Eelco has shaped one of the most internationally oriented independent publishers in the Netherlands, not by imposing a house style, but by developing what he calls “integral publishing”: where books, exhibitions, talks, and networks form one ecosystem. In 2024, nai010 celebrated its 30th anniversary.

In this conversation, we explore what “integral publishing” means in practice, how a book proposal is judged across content, timing, and financial feasibility, why material choices like paper can define the entire argument of a publication, and what happens when the measure of success shifts from print run to reach to impact.
