The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is the non-profit, umbrella professional association of all lawyers admitted to the Bar in Nigeria and a member of all statutory bodies that regulate the Nigerian Bar and Bench. The NBA is Nigeria’s foremost and oldest professional membership organization and Africa's most influential network of legal practitioners, with over 140,000 lawyers on its roll in 128 ac

tive branches across the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. The NBA is engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria. It has an observer status with the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, and a working partnership with many national and international governmental and non-governmental organisations concerned with human rights, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria and across the world. The NBA offers a unique National platform that is not available to any other Civil or professional organization in Nigeria. The NBA renews its leadership every two years when it elects a new President and other officials. The tenure of elected officials of the NBA runs for two years and is non-renewable.

EID AL-ADHA: A TIME FOR REFLECTION, COMPASSION AND RENEWAL

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) extends warm Eid al-Adha greetings to our Muslim colleagues across Nigeria and in the diaspora.

Eid al-Adha reminds us of the enduring values of sacrifice, obedience, faith, and compassion. Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) willingness to submit to the command of Allah teaches us that true strength lies in conviction, discipline, and service beyond self-interest. These are values that resonate deeply with our calling as legal practitioners and officers in the temple of justice.

“NIGERIA’S LEGAL EDUCATION SYSTEM MUST EVOLVE OR RISK IRRELEVANCE” — NBA PRESIDENT DEMANDS SWEEPING REFORMS AT LEGAL EDUCATION SUMMIT

At the 2026 NBA Legal Education Summit, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, called for urgent and far-reaching reforms in Nigeria’s legal education system, warning that the profession risks producing lawyers unprepared for modern realities if decisive reforms are not implemented.

Speaking on the theme, “Accelerating Legal Education Reform in Nigeria: Progress, Problems & Prospects,” the NBA President emphasized the need for a more practical, technology-driven, and competency-based legal education system capable of equipping lawyers for the realities of 21st-century practice.

He advocated stronger mentorship, expansion of legal clinics and moot courts, reduced reliance on rote learning, and greater integration of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship into legal training.

The NBA President also questioned whether the current duration for obtaining an LL.B degree remains necessary, stressing that practical skills and professional competence should take priority.

The Summit brought together legal academics, regulators, members of the Bench and Bar, law students, and stakeholders committed to shaping the future of legal education in Nigeria.
