Although the term was first used in 1912 by writer, Avery Abbott in his novel, Captain Martha Mary, the term became popular after American lingerie designer, Sylvia Pedlar created these super short nightgowns in response to fabric shortages due to WWII.

It is said, however, that Ms. Pedlar never liked the term and never used it.

The BABYDOLL was then revolutionised and adopted as daywear in the 1960s by a new generation of women with their own interests, politics and fashion trends - a complete abandonment of appropriate female stereotypes for self determined freedom.
