🇪🇸 Flight of the Week: ENVÍNATE DUO
Few producers have shaped the modern Spanish wine scene quite like Envínate.
Founded by four friends who met while studying oenology, Envínate has built a cult following by championing forgotten vineyards, indigenous varieties, and a philosophy of minimal intervention. Their mission is simple: allow each vineyard to express its identity with complete transparency. Through organic farming, native fermentations, and gentle winemaking, Envínate has become one of the world’s most respected voices for terroir-driven Spanish wine.
This week, discover two of their most compelling single-vineyard expressions.
Envínate Lousas ‘Parcela Seoane’ 2022
* The Terroir: Ribeira Sacra, Galicia. Grown on dizzyingly steep, 60-year-old terraces in the Amandi subregion. The soil here is dominated by broken quartz, gneiss, and heavy slate (“Lousas” means slate in Galician).
* The Grapes: Principally Mencía (~95%), mixed with native field-blend varieties like Brancellao and Merenzao.
* The Vibe & Taste: Elegant, perfumed, and alive. The warmer 2022 vintage gives this a beautifully expressive, forward profile. It bursts with wild red berries, violets, and cracked black pepper, backed by a deep, iron-like minerality and fine-grained, chalky tannins. It’s fluid and pure energy.
Envínate Taganán ‘Parcela Margalagua’ 2021
* The Terroir: Taganán, Tenerife (Canary Islands). This is a single, isolated parcel of century-old, untrained vines growing right on the edge of the Atlantic ocean. The roots dig straight into raw, black volcanic rock, completely exposed to salty sea winds.
* The Grapes: An ancient, complex field blend of ultra-rare native varieties, primarily Listán Negro and Baboso Tinto.
* The Vibe & Taste: A complete unicorn wine. The cooler 2021 vintage brought incredible precision and focus to Margalagua. It is deeply savory and ethereal—smoky, volcanic ash meets wild crushed strawberries, matchstick reduction, and dried herbs. On the palate, it has a signature briny, salty ocean finish that you can practically chew on.
