We started this message with: It is with a heavy heart…

But you know what?

F*ck the self-serving.

F*ck the platitudes.

And most of all,

F*ck the pandemic.

Lord knows we put up a really good fight. Right to the end, we were still able to pay our staff and overheads but a recent rent hike now marks our endgame.

Rentak was a tribute to David Mancuso’s legendary NYC house parties.

We loved the idea of a living (in every sense of the word) room, a place where like-minded people could mingle, listen to some excellent tunes on vinyl-only decks, have some great cocktails and dance their hearts out.

It was fun while it lasted and we wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. We want to thank you—our staff, partners, suppliers and especially our patrons— for joining us on this excellent journey.

Our final kopek is on 30 January 2021. Join us.

Rentak may be dead but as with Life, the Beat goes on.

Introducing our new cognac based cocktail, The Quintet, made with 5 different ingredients. It pays tribute to the first pairing between music and cognac in a name from the 1970's - Herbie Hancock Quintet VSOP. For nearly a century, the cognac brand has built a genuine and lasting relationship with the African American community instead of marginalising it. Hennessy were the first-ever corporate sponsor of the NAACP. More recently, Hennessy employed Erykah Badu, Nas, and Rihanna as brand ambassadors. Countless rappers also adopted cognac as their beverage of choice including Tupac, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg.

RENTAK X TASTEBUD

Smoked Chicken Tortilla
Continuing our collaboration with TASTEBUD, here’s the deceptively simple but no less delicious tortilla made with smoked, brined chicken, iceberg lettuce, tomato salsa, Thai cilantro chili sauce and served with a side of crisps.

As usual, we have a great selection of cocktails to go with it:- the fruity 11/12 and João to balance the savouriness of the tortilla. We also recommend spicy Joget. All make excellent companions.

Rentak: Rhythm & Booze

Rentak is a cocktail bar and music space that is inspired by, among other things, David Mancuso’s The Loft in New York. This hidden gem with a tropical indoor garden is housed in a pre-war building in the heart of Chinatown. Rentak is now part of the area’s renaissance of cafes, bars and cultural spaces coexisting with family businesses that have been running for generations, the Chinatown market, even Hindu and Taoist temples.

Rentak (rhythm in Malay) champions Mancuso’s idea of dance parties in intimate spaces featuring an eclectic mix of music. On the dance floor, enjoy specially curated playlists by local vinyl DJs playing a diverse selection of tunes on a warm analogue soundsystem built by one of the owners. We aim to bring back the retro/ vintage sound of the vinyl playback during the DJ sets on Fridays and Saturdays but do not discriminate against different formats of music playback. Regardless the format, we have our own playlists and do not rely on music streaming services. Main music genres are funk and disco but anything goes, we also play soul, R&B, electronic, indie, jazz and pop. Behind the bar, handcrafted cocktails are prepared by our seasoned mixologists, each named for a beat or a pioneer in sound. We specialise in cocktails (infused with local and regional herbs) and have a range of them, tastefully created by our experienced head mixologist. So do come down, sip on our concoctions, and do a little boogie too.
