Yasmin Kuymizakis, best known for her electro-pop project JOON, returns to her Maltese side project Ġiżimina after a decade. The project first emerged through performances and sound installations that reworked Maltese folk songs with misogynistic lyrics, placing them in new contexts and questioning ideas of gender, tradition, and public and private space. In her installation “Xandira Moqżieża” (Filthy Broadcast, 2015), radios hung on washing lines broadcast her reinterpretations of għana, echoing the contrast between men singing in public and women’s voices confined to the home. Alongside this she reimagined songs like Mary Rose Mallia’s “Il-Bejjiegħa tal-Ward” (2016) as a form of protest against overdevelopment and the ongoing erosion of Malta’s natural and urban environment.

Ten years on, Ġiżimina returns in a more personal form. Her new mini-album “Id-Dlam Id-Dawl” (released 8 May 2026) brings together seven tracks built from chopped guitar samples taken from the Magna Żmien archive. While still rooted in Maltese musical heritage, the focus shifts inward towards memory, identity, and lived experience.

With “Id-Dlam Id-Dawl” Ġiżimina steps away from direct critique into something quieter and more reflective, holding space between past and present where darkness and light meet, where things come apart and take shape again, sitting with uncertainty and renewal.

An intimate and immersive concert, in which voice and guitar intertwine to create a song born from the earth and rising like a prayer, an invocation, a vertical breath.

The repertoire combines original unreleased pieces, fragments of Mediterranean tradition, and moments of improvisation, building a sonic journey that engages with the space and its memory.

The sound is characterized by acoustic and electric guitars treated with ambient effects and eerie reverberations, which blend with the voice in a dimension suspended between contemporary folk and experimental research. The live set is essential yet highly evocative, capable of transforming any space into an ever-changing soundscape.

𝗜𝗧
Canto verticale
