STORIES FROM THE BACARO
01 · The Tramezzino

Turin invented it. Venice made it an icon. 🇮🇹🥪

The story of the Italian tramezzino begins in Turin in 1925, at the historic Caffè Mulassano.

Tradition has it that Gabriele D’Annunzio later gave it its Italian name: tramezzino, from tra-mezzo — something enjoyed between one meal and the next.

But when the tramezzino arrived in Venice, it became something else.

Venetian bacari made it softer, richer and much more generous.

And most importantly, they gave it its unmistakable “gobba”: that beautiful rounded shape created by piling the filling generously in the centre.

Ham & mushrooms.
Prawns & sauce.

Nothing complicated.

Just soft bread, generous fillings and the kind of food that was made to sit beside a glass of wine or a Spritz. 🍷

Over time, the tramezzino became part of Venetian aperitivo culture — just like cicchetti and bacari themselves.
