On Friday 09th October from 8:00pm Distortion presents
Schkeuditzer Kreuz is the solo project of New Zealand-born itinerant punk veteran Kieren Hills, occupying the intersection of industrial electronics, crust punk, DIY culture and uncompromising political resistance. Created from a self-built cabin in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, the project forges a singular, relentlessly forward-driving form of electronic punk, where mechanised sound and human physicality collide.
Kieren’s musical roots stretch back to New Zealand’s underground punk scene of the late 1980s, before relocating to Australia with Wellington punk outfit S*M*U*T in 1993. Subsequent years in Germany and Australia’s underground saw him move through projects spanning crust punk, hardcore and deathrock, including Murder Disco X, Vae Victis, Dark Horse and Death Church, experiences that continue to shape Schkeuditzer Kreuz’s uncompromising DIY ethos and live intensity.
Kieren’s route into noisy industrial and experimental electronic music also began close to home, through an earlier generation of New Zealand punk musicians pushing their own sounds into stranger territory: Skeptics, Gordons, Headless Chickens, Froit Head, LUNG, CeLL, Invisible Dead and Children’s Television Workshop among them. Those artists, in turn, opened the door to pioneers such as Throbbing Gristle, Laibach and Einstürzende Neubauten, alongside the abrasive post-hardcore and noise-rock of Big Black or Bu****le Surfers. In later years, Kieren’s listening continued to evolve through contemporary Australian artists including Knife, Religious Observance and Kollaps, and Japanese artists such as KUBINE, Anti Itch Cream, Noiseconcrete and P.O.V.
