BAR Freedom Bar Freedom is a boutique bar fully dedicated to just Japanese whisky near Dotonbori, Osaka. Osh*ta.

BAR FREEDOM is a small hideout bar in the center of Namba(near landmark Doutonbori Street) own by Taiwanese Canadian Tony and Japanese Bartender Mr. We are here to provide you a relaxing and unique Japanese style bar experience during your stay in Osaka. We have a large selection of Japanese Whisky, as well as whiskies from all over the world. Veteran bartender Osh*ta san can also make any cocktai

ls upon request. We have also carefully selected different kinds of Japanese liquors/sakes from different parts of the country. Tony who can communicate in English, Japanese or Chinese is more happy to provide with tips how to tour around Japan! If Tony is not there, Osh*ta san can use google translate to communicated with you, no problem! We hope to meet each and everyone of you who are traveling in Japan!

Last drum of 2025.
Paying tribute to my beloved friend Osh*ta-san. Ardbeg was his favorite whisky and it was the whisky that I ignited my love for whisk(e)y.
Yes I added the (e) because I also enjoys Irish and Bourbon😆

Thank you each and every one of you, new faces and old faces from different parts of the world who have stumbled into Bar Freedom. Despite the chaotic period which we all experiencing, I hope the conversations/whiskies which we shared provided a little bit of peacefulness and happiness in our memory.

The Japanese whisky industrial is heading into a new era while the whole whisky industry is slowing down a bit. But I’m sure 2026 will be an exciting year for us whisky lovers.

Wish each and every one of you a happy new year and I hope 2026 will be a wonderful whisky year for all of us.

After the over whelming Spring season, things have finally settled down a bit entering June😮‍💨

I attended the WhiskyTalk event in Hakata, Fukuoka last weekend and had the opportunity to try some Korean and Chinese whiskies.

From Korea, the two samples from the Gimpo Distillery(known as The Kimchangsoo Whisky) were truly unique. One is a Malted Rye whisky matured in Oloroso Sherry Quarter cask. The other one is using local Korean barley matured in a virgin Korean oak cask. The Korean oak is similar to a type of Japanese oak called kashiwa(柏木).

From China, the Laizhou distillery the rice wine barrel(花雕酒) was very super unique! According to the representative, it’s their version of a sherry cask!

What I love about their approach to whisky making is using local elements.

So despite having the history and the fame that Japanese whisky has, we should all look out for the Chinese and Korean whiskies in the next 5-10years. Just like the car industry right now, they might take over Japanese whisky one day too 🥸

The amount of trouble you have to go through to get a tour at the Yamazaki distillery is often discussed among my customers.

Here is a backup option: Suntory’s 2nd single malt distillery, Hakushu, located in Yamanashi prefecture. The Hakushu single malt from Suntory is often overshadowed by its bigger brother Yamazaki and its younger brother Hibiki.

After being to Yamazaki distilleries multiple times, I have to say the Hakushu distillery is much better tour experience. Even my wife enjoyed the tour although she does not drink whisky at all😂

The year of 2024 was a blessing year. It’s hard to put in words how fortunate I am to have all the love and support from old customers of Osh*ta-san who visited Bar Freedom pre-covid and new friends that I made in 2024. YOU guys gave me the strength and confidence to move forward with Bar Freedom. I learned that It’s not just about the whiskies but most importantly the people and the conversations.

Jumping from behind the scene to now in the spotlight behind the bar counter, it allowed me to appreciate all the work and the great foundation that Osh*ta-san has left for me.

2025 will mark my 10th year since I started my whisky journey from 2015. The whisky industry has involved greatly since we opened in 2015. So did the Japanese whisky industry. With more than 100 distilleries now in Japan, 2025 “can” be an exciting year for whisky lovers…we will see how it turns out😳

Wish everyone a healthy and safe year of 2025. And remember to drink lots of whiskies. Not just Japanese whiskies😆

Flora 2024 non-peated 53% Abv - 1st ever single malt release from Ikawa Distillery. As of 2024, it is the highest distillery in Japan, resides in the Minami Alps of Shizuoka Prefecture; roughly 1200m from sea level. Using Prinstin spring water from the alps and I had high exceptions before I tried it. As I anticipated, it is still a bit too young. But you can certainly nose the floral notes like a vanilla ice cream right away. The palate is a bit bitter(they did it intentionally for a longer finish). I wish they would for another 3-4 years before they bottle their first whisky. But you can certainly taste the potential and strong commitment in utilizing the amazing nature that surrounds the distillery😊 #井川蒸留所

Following the Asaka distillery in Fukushima, here is another favorite of mine: the Sakurao distillery located in Hiroshima.

Not a new distillery, the Sakurao distillery used to only release blended whiskies, a mix of their own malt whisky and blending it imported grain whisky. In 2018, after a full renovation of the distillery, they came out with 2 new single malts: the Sakurao桜尾 and the Togouchi戸河内 in 2021, along with a sherry cask expression. The reason why I love these two new single malts is because they are both bottled at 43%, very approachable for new whisky drinkers but can also be appreciated by whisky veterans.

The distillery is just located across from the famous Miyajima Island and offers English tours once a day(online reservation needed).

If you are planning to visit Hiroshima, I strongly recommend taking a trip down to the distillery😊 #桜尾 #戸河内

We will re-open as soon as it is safe to do so
