n South Africa, we have seen the publication of the strawberry genome, and are expecting the peach genome to be published soon, bringing the number of available sequences for the family to three including apple. Additionally the raspberry and rose genome sequencing projects are at various stages of completion and we are keenly anticipating the fruits of those projects in the near future too. These sequence data are being employed in an exciting range of research projects, including the development of high-throughput genotyping arrays for apple, peach, cherry and strawberry; the elucidation of the genetic basis of a range of agronomic traits such as fruit texture, colour and aroma, pest and disease resistance and flowering; and the determination of genome evolution in the Rosaceae, to name but a few.
