Ancient Roman military camp discovered in Swiss Alps

A team of archaeologists from the University of Basel, in collaboration with the Archaeological Service of Graubünden, has unearthed the remains of a previously unknown Roman military camp in the Colm la Runga corridor of Switzerland’s Oberhalbstein Alps.

Fragment of the Colossus of Constantine, circa 312 AD [3024x3242]

The statue was commissioned by Emperor Constantine I around 312-315 AD to celebrate his victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge.

Originally, the statue stood in the Basilica of Maxentius in the Roman Forum and would have measured over 40 feet (12 meters) in height.

Now located in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
