Have you heard of a concept called Third Place? We came across it back in 2021 before opening Dive (thanks to ). In sociology, the third place refers to the social surroundings that are separate from the two usual social environments of home ("first place") and the workplace ("second place"). Referring to places such as bars, cafes, clubs, bookstores, theatres (among others), third places have a cultural significance in establishing feelings of a sense of place and allowing people of differing backgrounds to cross paths.
Over the last 3 years, we noticed that DIVE started soaking in characteristics of a ‘third place’. The extent of this became clear when we had to shut DIVE abruptly in May 2024 when we realized just how many people missed DIVE as an everyday bar and what it meant not just to us but also to our regulars – a third place for soo many.
Last 3 months have been tough for a small business like ours, which can’t easily absorb these kinds of sudden shocks. We’re glad now we can finally get those taps back to life with DIVE’s re-opening around the corner.
Expect a few changes in DIVE 2.0. We’ve maintained the same vibes, the good feels and the familiarity of your favourite third place, while embracing our dive-bar-spirit!
