Omi Puri arrived 🚂 in Calcutta in 1943 as an 18 year old from faraway Lahore. His parents had recently passed, his older siblings scattered. He came looking for opportunity and found work at the Grand Hotel through his brother in law Mohan Hansles.

Calcutta was in turmoil. The Bengal Famine was underway. American, British, Australian, Canadian, African and other Allied troops occupied the city as it was a major military base for World War 2 💥

Omi worked his way up from a trainee to a manager learning quickly. His forte was building hotel systems, the checks and balances required to keep operations in line. He had a knack for dealing with people🕵🏽♂️. He soon became the point man for fixing troubled hotel properties and was one of the first Indians managers to be in-charge of a prestigious hotel. This was 1949 and also the year he married Swaran.

🏨Omi moved between Oberoi properties: Gopalpur-on-Sea to Chandigarh’s Mount View Hotel, then the Mount Everest Hotel in Darjeeling and finally back to the Oberoi Grand Hotel in Calcutta.

In 1959 he formed a partnership with Ellis Joshua, bought a 🇨🇭Swiss owned tearoom from Cinzio Trinca and went on to create one of India’s most memorable urban hotspots, the now legendary

Omi also served as ✍️ president of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurants Association of India twice in 1974 and 1978
