पैरा-बैडमिंटन स्टार नित्या श्री सिवन ने हाल ही में पेरिस पैरालिंपिक में कांस्य पदक सहित 36 से अधिक अंतरराष्ट्रीय पदक जीते हैं। अपनी छोटी लंबाई के कारण स्कूल में लगातार चिढ़ाने का सामना करने के बावजूद, नित्या ने इन चुनौतियों को जीत में बदल दिया।

उन्होंने एचटी से कहा, "मुझे अभी भी याद है कि कैसे मेरे सहपाठी मेरी लंबाई के कारण मेरा मज़ाक उड़ाते थे। लेकिन अब, वे सभी मेरी सफलता की प्रशंसा करते हैं।"

तमिलनाडु के होसुर में एक मध्यमवर्गीय परिवार में पली-बढ़ी नित्या को पहली बार अपने भाइयों के साथ क्रिकेट खेलते समय खेलों के प्रति प्यार का एहसास हुआ। बैडमिंटन में उनकी रुचि धीरे-धीरे विकसित हुई, लेकिन 2016 के रियो ओलंपिक ने वास्तव में उनकी प्रतिस्पर्धी भावना को जगाया। उन्होंने कहा, "मैंने खेल और खिलाड़ियों की प्रशंसा करना शुरू कर दिया।"

2018 में एक जिला चैंपियनशिप में रजत पदक जीतने के बाद, नित्या को अपने पिता के एक सहकर्मी के माध्यम से पैरा-बैडमिंटन से परिचित कराया गया, जो एक राज्य स्तरीय पैरा-बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी थे। यह उनके जीवन का एक महत्वपूर्ण मोड़ था, और उन्होंने अपने आलोचकों को गलत साबित करने का बीड़ा उठाया।

Pratibha Thapliyal, a 43-year-old mother of two, became the first Indian female bodybuilder to win a medal at the World Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championship-2023. She secured a bronze medal in South Korea from November 6-12, 2023. Prior to the event, she faced health challenges, including thyroid issues and a severe case of dengue, which led to a platelet count of 17,000. Para-badminton star Nithya Sre Sivan has earned an impressive collection of over 36 international medals, including a recent bronze at the Paris Paralympics. Despite facing constant teasing in school due to her short height, Nithya turned these challenges into victories.

“I still remember how my classmates made fun of me because of my height. But now, they all admire my success,” she shared with HT.

Growing up in a middle-class family in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, Nithya first found her love for sports while playing cricket with her brothers. Her interest in badminton developed gradually, but it was the 2016 Rio Olympics that truly sparked her competitive spirit. “I started admiring the game and the players,” she said.

After winning a silver medal in a district championship in 2018, Nithya was introduced to para-badminton through a colleague of her father, who was a state-level para-badminton player. This was a turning point in her life, and she set out to prove her critics wrong.

“I achieved so much, and I have answered everyone who made fun of me,” she added. “I always believed that hard work can help you achieve your goals. I never imagined that one day I would stand here, holding our country’s flag.”

Lohri, celebrated this year on Monday, January 13, marks the end of winter and the beginning of the harvest season in India, particularly in the northern states like Punjab and Haryana. The festival has cultural and agricultural significance, with people expressing their gratitude for a bountiful harvest and welcoming longer days after the winter solstice. Traditionally associated with the harvest of rabi crops, Lohri is a festival that symbolizes love, warmth, and family. They offer sesame seeds, jaggery, sugarcane, and roasted peanuts as part of the ritual. The collected cow dung along with wood is then burned in the evening of Lohri.

The evening is lit up with folk songs and energetic folk dances, like Banghra or gidda. Dhol is also a central aspect of the celebrations. The fire itself signifies the sun’s warmth and light, driving away the cold and ushering in brighter days.

Lohri traditions are steeped in storytelling, with many families sharing tales of folklore and legends, such as the popular story of Dulla Bhatti, a Punjabi hero. As per legends, Dulla Bhatti, lived during the Mughal era and is celebrated for his bravery and sense of justice. He protected local girls from being abducted and arranged their marriages, providing them with dowries and ensuring their safety.

The popular Lohri song “Sundar Mundriye” tells his deeds, particularly the story of two girls, Sundari and Mundari, whom he saved from a forced marriage. This tale is shared around the bonfire, highlighting themes of courage, honour, and community.

One of the most important parts of an Indian festival is the food. Lohri is made much more memorable with delicacies like Makki di roti (cornmeal flatbread) and sarson da saag (mustard greens curry). Sweets like gajak, til laddoo (sesame seed sweets), and jaggery-based treats are relished, along with roasted peanuts and popcorn. The simple yet wholesome food that is consumed during Lohri, symbolizes the deep festival’s connection to agriculture.

A festival never feels the same without family and friends

Six-year-old Arishka from Kothrud, Pune, has always shown a remarkable passion for athletics, regularly participating in activities like cycling, trekking, and running. During her 15-day expedition to Everest Base Camp, she fearlessly endured the freezing cold, wrapped in eight layers of clothing, with her mother by her side.

"Arishka is full of energy and enthusiasm," shares her mother, Dimple. "We often trek to forts around Pune on weekends, and Sinhagad Fort is a favorite we’ve climbed multiple times."

Arishka’s incredible feat of conquering the Everest Base Camp at over 17,500 feet showcases her adventurous spirit and determination. "I was thrilled. It was freezing, but I dream of one day standing on Mount Everest’s summit," says the young trailblazer with a sparkle in her eyes.
